Tuesday morning. Mr. W. G. Corey who is visiting Mr. and Mrs. Walpole had built a small fire in the heater to make it more comfortable for the children to dress themselves by, and in a short time the sparks were falling down through the ceil ing, and wondering what was the matter Mr. Corey ran upstairs and discovered the room full of smoke. He ran down hurriedly and aroused the rest and further attempt was made to gain entrance to the room upstairs with buckets of water, but it was too late. The smoke and flames were beyond control. The fire department turned out immedi ately to check other buildings and to help carry out everything moveable Practically everything was saved but the house is flat in ruins. This was one of our best residences and It is to be regretted fire gained such head way before discovering same. A number of ladies interested in a community day in connection with the closing events of the local school met with Prof. Anderson Friday aft ernoon and- decided to promote a community dinner Wednesday, May 11th. A managerial committee was chosen with Mrs. George Rand at the head, assisted by Mrs. M. E. Lester, Mrs. H. C. Wolfe, Mrs. M. E. Doble and Mrs. Nora Castle. It was decided to ask each house hold to provide a wellstocked bask et of eatables, comprising a sub- stantial proportion of solid foods and a moderate quantity of pasteries, cakes, ect. as usual. Arrangements will be made to serve coffee, so it is recommended that the basket con tain a few cups and spoons. Cream will be solicited and sugar furnish ed somehow. Mrs. Doble and Mrs. Howard were chosen to serve the coffee; Mesdames II. C. Wolfe, H. T. Walpole, Nora Castle, M. E. Lester and E. H. Anderson will have charge of the serving of the food. It is be lieved that efficient and orderly plans have been devised for the ser vices that will meet the approval of all. * The dinner will be at the new school building and baskets should be placed in the hands of the com mittee between ten-thirty and eleven thirty if possible. There will be games and sports of various kinds by the school pupils from ten In the morning until noon. Afternoon entertainment by the school and graduating exercises. The play so much advertised will be given in the evening beginning at eight o'clock sharp. It Is entitled “Among the Breakers" a drama in Iwo acts with appropriate music before and between acts. The home talent forc es have spared no time in trying to get their parts down but have had various difficulties owing to some of the participants being called away on business and having to fill in with other new members. There will be no charge for admission to the play or any of the doings and everybody is invited. As the writer understands it. We will be glad to welcome our neighbors from Boardman to Her miston and from other places. It was the intention to dedicate the new school building on this day and this may be posible yot. The matter has been taken up with the Masonic order and the Tuscan Ledge of Umatilla, Oregon is now trying to get special arrangements to carry out this dedication plan on this day but It will be a question if time per mit it. If it cannot be done on May 11th, the plan will be carried out at a later date before the school opens for the next term. Everybody In the district will be expected to devote at least a portion of the day to a general community meet if at all possible. Most people believe that it must run its course, not know ing that the time is very much short ened, and that there is little danger from the disease when this remedy is given. It has been used in many epidemics of whooping cough, with pronounced success. It is safe and pleasant to take. Pd. Adv. No. 9281. Reserve Diet.
