Or wish you had next Winter LOCAL COOPERATION We all c'i us admit the power of cooperation. "Two heads are better than one,” and granted this we must concede that three heads'are better than two and four are better than three. Each man separately stands for his own individual force; but If a number of men join together for some object, their power in the community increases as each man joins, much more tapidly than his personal force would warrant. Notwithstanding our knowledge of this fact, it is often hard to secure cooperation in local affairs. True cooperation means giving up one's own preferences, subordinating one’s personality, cconsidering the public good as better than one’s own. The man who forgets himself is the most suc- cessful in working with other people. Every man naturally wants the best for his town or village, but the community that achieves the best is the one where the citizens work un- unselfishly together. In other words, when we refer to the public spirit of a community, we simply mean its capacity for organized and smooth-run ning cooperation. WE HAVE TRIED TO TELL THE PUBLIC THROUGH OUR ADVERTISING SPACE FOR SEVERAL WEEKS PAST. TO ORDER THEIR SUPPLY OF COAL FOR THE WINTER. Senator Chamberlain is touring the state to see what is needed in the way of legislation, and incidentally boosting his candidacy for the United States Senate. Why does he always wait until election time to see what is needed? Chamberlain has done less for the state than any Senator we have had for years. Its a poor time now to start looking for something to make the people believe he is really going to try to help them. WE AN. TICIPATE A SHORTAGE ABOUT THE TIME THAT WE WILL EE NEEDING COAL. Tum-A-Lum Lumber Forest Facts of Oregon At a conservative estimate Ore gon’s four hundred fifty billion feet of standing timber is worth $500,- 000,000 on the stump. Harvested and cut into lumber, its value is in creased twenty-fold and becomes ten billion dollars. Oregon’s timber pays a large part of the state's taxes—in some coun ties the bulk of them. The logging and milling of her timber supports the largest payroll of any industry in the state. Oregon’s sawmills cut two and two thirds billion beard feet of lum ber in 1918 With proper protection logging and restocking, these for- ests will provide for the lumber in dustry each year twice this amount forever—but fire must be kept out.
