Popular Young Lady Word conies from the U. of O. at Eugene that Miss Marion Briggs, for mer high school student and more recently clerk In the First National Bank of Hermiston, has become quite popular at that institution, having been one of 19 freshmen girls elect ed to become members of Kwana, a sophomore honorary society. Kwana was organized at the University of Oregon several years ago, and only freshmen girls are elected to mem bership. Those chosen are 19 girls who are the most popular, best known and most democratic on the campus. New Residences E. W. Mack, erstwhile local drug gist, is fast becoming one of the lar gest property and home owners in the city of Hermiston. Recently he purchased two lots on the corner of Gladys avenue and Third street, and now has lumber on the ground for the erection of two modern residen ces. At his home pince on the cor ner of Third and Main avenue he is also having constructed a residence on a vacant lot adjoining. These three houses, when completed, will be for rent. On Hermiston avenue on the West Side three blocks from the depot Cressy Is buiding a resi- Geo. dence, the dimensions of which is 28x40 feet. The property there owned by Mr. Cressy consists of four lots, on one of which a large apiary or bee house will be built by the above gentleman. BOARDMAN NEWS The Boardman Lumber Co. will ere long rise from Its ashes and be a larger and more complete lumber institution than before the big fire that recently razed its yards. The school board voted Tuesday night to apply for the establishment of Smith-Hughes agriculture as a part of the high school course of the Boardman schools. C. C. Johnson, instructor in the state college at Pullman, has been offered the posi tion. Other outside teachers elect ed to fill vacancies were Naomi Runner and Blanche Scharman, both of Falls City. All the posi tions are now filled except home economics. A minimum salary of $1200 Is in force for next term, This is in accord with the general sentiment of Morrow and Umatilla counties. The next meeting of the Board man Parent Teachers’ Association will be held in the Auditorium Fri day afternoon, April 2 at 2 p. m. It is desired at that time to complete arrangements for establishment of the hot lunch, to appoint a commit- tee of three to co-operate with the board and the principal in the for- ■nal dedication exercises, and to dis- cuss the educational millage bills to be voted on in May. On Saturday, April 10, at 2 p. ni. from the front door of the Boardman public school will be sold at public auction the school buildings at Cas- tie Rock, including school house, woodshed and outhouse.
