THE H ermiston H erald HERMISTON, UMATILLA COUNTY, OREGON, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 1. 1919 VOL. XIII DAIRYMEN ID ESTABLISH CO-OPERATIVE CREAMERY I Made No Mistake The Last Drive Who knows of a man that has a folding bed in his home in this town ? Well, it doesn’t matter, only if you knew this story would be all the funnier. Late one night recent ly one of our local carpenters was awakened by the violent ringing of his telephone, and in giving the con versation that ensued between him self and the Utile lady on the other end of the wire we will have to use fictitious names , in accordance with our promise to the carpenter to have him appear incognito in this joke: “Is that you Mr. Johnson,” asked the small voice of a little girl. “This is Amy Jones. Mother wants you to come around right away and bring your tools. Father has met with an accident.” "You have made a mistake, Amy,” replied the carpenter on hearing the word "accident.” ‘‘You want the doctor.” "You are the man we want. Mr. Johnson,” insisted the childish voice. "Father is shut up in the folding bed.” The coming Victory Liberty Loan will be the last. One more big job to pay for the victory, or immediate demands of victory, and Liberty Loans will be history. There must be no lagging by the American peo- pie in the drive that will come in April, It will not be a time for ex- cuses. The same spirit that char- acterized the last hour of fighting before the armistice went into effect should be shown by the stay-at-home people for whom the Yanks fought in France. The Yanks didn’t shirk that last job. Many gave their lives with peace a matter of minutes away. Every American at home worth the victory won by those boys in khaki will work as hard in the coming lean as in the first. There was a large attendance at the dairymen’s meeting held in this city Wednesday evening, and the outcome was that stçps were taken looking to the establishment of a ¡cooperative creamery in Hermiston at an early date. The committee appointed to look after the details in connection with this proposition consists of J. H. Reid, Henery Som- merer, W. F. Hamman, Wm Bensel and George A. Cressy. There was spirited discussions on many points that have to do with the interests of the local dairymen, and this resulted in the formulation and passage of the following resolu tion; Resolved, that it is the sense of the dairymen of the project that the local merchants owe protection to the dairy farmers to the extent that they decline to handle any of the butter substitutes in a way to compete with dairy products. Another resolution that passed unanimously was one commending the bill now before the Oregon leg islature which has for its purpose the placing of a tax on butter substi tutes and licensing of manufacturers and dealers in these substitutes. Secretary Phipps was instructed to write to the Eastern Oregon repre sentatives and senators at Salem to help all they can in an endeavor to secure its passage. Before closing the meeting q com mittee was appointed for each school district in the project to conduct an educational campaign among the children concerning the value of dairy products as a food.
