SATURDAY, MARCH 2. 1918 UMATILLA COUNTY WAR COUNCIL ORGANIZED Since the entry of the United States into the war Umatilla county has held the record of being one of the most patriotic in the state, and now to cap this excellent showing it has gone a step further by the organization of a war council that is to be permanent during continuance of the present gigantic struggle. Under the plan, which was adopted last Friday at a meeting of represent ative citizens in Pendleton from all over the county, Umatilla county is to be districted, and each district, the center of which is one of the towns, is GENERAL PERSHING MEETS KING ALBERT ATTORNEY HINKLE ENLIGHTENS SETTLERS NO. 24 SOMETHING INTERESTING ABOUT YOUR TAXES PATRIOTISM IS KEY NOTE OF MEETING This being around the time of year when one begins to think about the pay men', of taxes, it is probable that a little information on thia timely sub ject would be appreciated by a large majority of our readers. Through the courtesy of County Assessor C. P. Strain we are enabled to give this, that gentleman having compiled a most complete abstract of taxes payable in 1918 in Umatilla county. The tabulated statement shows that the county and stale levy is 74 milis, and that the total valuation of the ceunty is 951,499,607. Thus the total amount of taxes to be raised from a'l sources is 9731,719 38, this being a net- increase uf 959,020.70 over the 1916 tax. The city of Hermiston has a valua tion of $319,807, and on this amount 93,997 60 is to be raised bv a 124 mill tax. School district No. 14, in which Hermiston is situated, hasa valuation of $757,665. This will raise 910 001 18 by a 13.2 mill levy. Columbia school district has a valua-1 tion of 9378,174, and by a 7.4 mill levy 92 798.48 will be raised. One school district, No. 109, has no school children, likewise no taxes lo raise, but has a valuation of 9189,585 Tbe town of Umatilla, where the famous woman council hold reins of government, has the highest tax rate of any plací in tbe county, it being 17.4 mills, while Helix has tbe small est with 7.6 mills, and Stanfield next lowest with 9.3 mills.
