C. Oliver, traveling freight agent for the O-W. R. & N , was here Wed nesday. Verle Reeves, brother of Carroll, came up from Eugene Thursday for the summer. Geo. W. Brad'ey, former county treasurer and who owns land here, was down this week demonstrating an auto mobile tire half sole for which he has the county agency. Wednesday afternoon and evening Miss Butler gave talks at the Civic Center on food values and meat sub stitutes. Her talks were very inter esting and timely and there was a god attendance at both meetings. Sunday evening at the Audilorium Harry Chambers, of Pendleton, made a splendid talk in favor of the Red Cross which was listened to very at- tentively by a large audience. In the afternoon Mr. Chambers spoke at Columbia on the same subject. The creamery has installed a five horse motor for its churn in place of the steam engine, which will prove a decided betterment. The new cement floor is now completed. The Hermis ton creamery is an up to date institu tion that is doing much for the com munity. Monday school district No. 112 held its annual meeting and election of officers. E. L. Jackson was elected director for two years and John Mc Elroy for three years. C. M. Jackson is already on the board and W. G. Rodda was re-elected clerk. A tax equivalent to 44 mills was voted. At the annual meeting and election of officers for school district No. 14 Monday, C S. McNaught was reelected director and R. C. Walber was elect ed clerk. A tax of 110,000 was voted The report of the clerk showed the district reduced its indebtedness by 12,800 the past year. Of the $10,000 voted 12,300 is to take care of bonds now falling due and *800 is for a sink ing fund for later bond issues which must now be provided by law. Wednesday six young men left here for Portland to join the navy. They were Ross Shaw, Robert West, Walter Beasley, Clarence Carson, Harry Todd and George Caldwell. Caldwell’s home lain Irrigon but he has been working here. After the Moyle show Wednes- dty evening a dance was given in their honor which was well attended and much enjoyed. After the dance the boys went by auto to Umatilla to catch the night train. Lumber Situation We are in the grip of the worst car shortage the world has ever known—and getting worse. Ninety per cent of all fuel shipments will be made during the three summer months. Next to fuel, shipments of silo and granary mater ial will have precedence over all others--as this tends to increase the country's food suupply. May we suggest that you anticipate your wants and order your supplies at once.
