If they averaged but • nickel apiece the grand total would be between $1,500 and 12,000. How important the pennies and nickels »nd dimes may be in the alleviation of suffering and misery among the wounded on the battlefields of Europe, where the American sol- diera will soon be doing tboir bit to help win the war, la shown by some figures prepared by the Red Cross. For example. Ooe cent will buy iodine to dis- Infect a wound. One cent will buy enough gauze for one dressing. A nickel will buy a bandage. Eight cents will pay for a tempor ary splint. A dime will provide chloroform for an operation. Twenty-five cents expended as above mav save a limb or a life of a wounded soldier. Every man, woman and child in the state can do something in this gigantic Red Cross campaign. There will be many of those who are not circum- stanced so as to be among the heavy givers but there never was a move- ment in the history of philanthropy which offered such abundant oppor tunity for the high and low, rich and poor to join hands in the common cause as is presented by the American Red Cross. The humble penny, the modest nickel and the bright little dime, each can and does do a definite, practical thing toward the work that la before ue to do. That Robert Fulton set more store by his submarine plans than any of bls other projects or achievement* In ship designing to recalled by Farnham Bishop's “Story of the Submarine.” It was In Parto, where Fulton bad receiv ed from Napoleon an advance of 10,000 francs to build a submarine, that his Nautilus was brought to completion. “On her first trial, on the Seine at Paris, in May, 1801,” writes Mr. Bish op, “the Nautilus remained submerged for twenty minutes with Fulton and one other man on board and a lighted candle for them to navigate by. This consumed too much air, however, so a small glass window was placed in the conning tower and gave light enough instead. Four men were then able to remain under for an hour. “After that Fulton made the first compressed air tank, a copper globe containing a cubic foot of compressed air, by drawing on which the subma- rine's crew could stay under for six hours. This was In the harbor of Brest, where the Nautilus had been taken overland. "A trial attack was made on an old hulk, which was successfully blown up. The submarine also proved its ability either to furl Its sails and dive quickly out of sight or to cruise for a considerable distance on the surface. Once It sailed for seventy miles down the English channel." Classified. NOTICE OF SHERIFF'S SALE UNDER EXE CUTION Morning service, 11 o'clock. Prayer meeting Thursday eve., 8:00.
