SCROGGS 45 With some of our home boys joining the colors war with Ger many is brought much closer than would otherwise be the case. And if actual conflict comes and there is a call made Hermis ton will respons with its share as it has in everything else. There are a number of splendid roads around Hermiston but they need a little work to keep them up. For the most part a drag when wet would be sufficient. Just plant the C Tape a row Greatest Improvement Planting ROENS is simple to understand that they germinate quicker and better The seeds are spaced • he proper distance apart—so no thinning out is necessary. Only the finest selected seeds of thoroughly tested prize winning strainsare used. And the labor is reduced to • minimum. Surely thisis what you should Mrs. Ralph, who was operated on last week at Pendleton for appendicitis, is recovering rapidly. Mrs. J. F. McNaught left Thursday of last week for Oakland to visit with her daughter, Mrs. Gary. A. P. Garner is home after spend ing the winter in Kansas City in tbe employ of the government. Mrs. Geo Davis is here from Havre. Mont., and will look after the fine Davis orchard this summer. Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Girts left this week for the Twin Falls country where they will make their home. Tho». Campbell went to Spokane this week to join Mrs. Campbell in a visit with their daughter. They will return Sunday. Mrs. Swayze was dinner hostess Sun day when Mr. and Mrs. Palmer, Mr and Mrs. Beisse, Gertrude and George were the guests. The pamphlet on the six mil lion dollar bonding measure will soon be in the hands of the voters. Do not throw it away without a careful study. This seems like an opportunity for improved roads that we are not likely to get again if now turned down. Its provisions require so much detail in carrying out as to be almost impossible. For instance, our sidewalks, where they can be called such, are a disgrace, but no city engineer appears to have been able to have them repaired. Mr. and Mrs Bucholz, accompanied by three fady Iriends, were down from Stanfield Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Lynes, who have been bere several months, left Thurs day by auto for Portland and will make their home in the valley. F. C. McKenzie spent Saturday and Sunday in Pendleton visiting Mia Me Kenzie aud the boys. Both boys are getting along very nicely. Tuesday evening of last week at the Baptist church Mrs Reese of Stan ti Id gave a very enjoyable recital by members of ber piano class in this city. Those taking part were Edith Barthel, Gertrude Beisse, Mabel Brown, Clarice Watson, Esther Gra- ham, Doris Swayze, Arlene Kenned , Marshall Newport, John D. Watson jr and Harald Barthel. In addition Mrs. Hawthorne and Miss Walpole of Irr • gon also contributed to the pleasure of the evening. Friday evening about 25 of the Epworth Leaguers and their friends gathered at tbe parsonage for a short bu-iness session after which a most enjoyable evening was spent with a “newspaper social.” One of the most interesting features was a dress mak- ing contest. Each couple was given scissors, pins and newspapers and tbe gentleman was instructed to make his lady a gown There were some very good ones but tbe one receiving tie prize was a most elaborate evening gown from Paria Tbe entire even ing was one of laughter and merriment. Without editors, orthogra phy, etymology, syntax and punctua tion would soon fail. The beauty about editors is that they are Independent and uncompromising. They yield noth ing to the rabble for tbe sake of prof its. If they print blood and thunder stories, mushy love tales and plati tudinous essays. It is not to make money, but merely because they know that if the public doesn’t get this kind of reading it will find worse mischief elsewhere.—Life. TTMAT1LLA PROJECT. Oregon.
