Smith of New York, was nominated for the presidency. On the first ballot he lacked nine and one-third votes of the <33 1-3 necessary for nomin ation. There wus a wild scramble on the part of several states to change their vote to Smith. Ohio was recognized by the chair and changed to of their 48 vote? to Smith.
