G range M aster Speaks. S tate M aster Geo. A. P alm iter, in addressing the sta te grange at R ainier recently, aaid: “The trouble Is th a t Industry and labor are pro tected F arm ers a re not and they never will he as long us they re- rfialn unorganized." In urging co operation, he said th a t only about 3» cents of the consum er's dollar Is now retu rn ed to the farm er. He th in k s freight rate s arc unfair be cause based on weight w ithout con sideration of value Regarding taxes, he declared: All taxes should be levied on ability to pay, fdr any oth er basis m eans simply confiscation. T h ere is plenty of w ealth in Oregon to pay all taxes w ithout placing a burden upon uny one." LOOKING EOKWAKD (By W. W. W illiam s) T he w riter when a stu d e n t in college read "Looking Backw ard," by Edw ard Bellamy. The book was a prophecy from the vantage grouud of tw en tieth -cen tu ry view point and observation. As th e new civilization w as des cribed in realistic form and the conflict between cap ital and labor settled In a grew som e conflict we rem arked to our college friends as we discussed th e hook, "How fa n tastic ! how Impossible! how ideal istic!" D oubtless the little social d iscu s sion which was so delightful and common in college circles would end with the rem ark, "J u st an o th er good citizen gone nutty." W hat happened la st night when m illions of people sat in th e ir com fortable ch airs a t home and heard the nom inating speeches, heard the actual votes of the different sta te s as they w ere announced by C h a ir man Moses at K ansas City and had th e re su lt several m inutes before it was actu ally officially an n o u n ced was predicted by E dw ard Bel lamy half a ce n tu ry ago W hat a m iracle! But we have every reason to believe th a t still more, w onderful things are ju st before us. No m ore do doubting T hom ases o b stru ct the onw ard m arch of inventive, creative brain. The aclevem ent of the day Is surpassed on th e m orrow . It takes a brave person to be a d oubt er in the presence ot the dem on stra tio n of the developm ents of yes terday. A few decades ago all suggestion of possible im provem ents met with scoffing and the cold stare. Today everyone m entions th is or th a t as lagging behind o th er developm ents and a re anxious to bespeak its success. We a re Indeed living in a differ ent atm osphere. T he rad io brings us closer together. The m oral and sp iritu al principles will have g re a t er opportunity und facilities to overcom e selfish n ess and c o rru p tion. The challenge w hich com es to the inventor, th e scientist, the creativ e inind in education, the sp iritu al leader, the statesm an , the reform er, bulks big. Not only are th e m eans and equipm ent available hut I he people a re receptive, sym pathetic, indeed, they have th e glad hand con stan tly extended w ith faith believing lliat a' new blessing for hum anity is incubating.
