CIRCLE HAS ACTIVE YEAR A resum e recen tly m ade by of ficers of Union P aren t-T each er c ir cle of D istrict 26, C lackam as coun ty, show s th a t m uch has been ac com plished during th e p ast year, and th a t the circle has been an a c t ive body. E arly in th e school year the circle took ad vantage of a com m unity picnic and barbecue to serve confectionery an d serve hot lunches, which netted them a neat sum. f h e C lackam as County Coun cil w as en tertain ed on October 11. and on October 30 th e an n u al b a zaar w as held. T he circle asked th e d istric t for an allow ance for a gravel drive and w alks on th e school grounds, w hich w as put in at th e beginning of. th e shool year, also for an allow ance for hot lunches for th ree m onths w hich w as also granted. The w illing m em bers took tu rn s at serving. At sev eral of th e m eetings the sew ing and cooking g irls held cake and cookie or candy sales to raise funds to send tw o delegates to Oregon A g ricu ltu ral college sum m er school. Near the close of school they w ere still lacking funds so a com m ittee w as ap p o in t ed to help the girls. T he outcom e was th a t th e circle loaned the g irls the n ecessary am ount. A re g u la r m usic teach er was hired who gave lessons every week. New playground equipm ent w as p urchased and set up. T he trav elin g lib ra ry has also been handled by th e cicrle. Corn and potato clubs have been organized am ong the boys, nearly every eligible boy signing up. The b irth d ay flower fund has grow n a little each m onth. At the May m eeting th e club g irls held th eir achievem ent day. Besides th is every one p resen t paid trib u te to “M other" by w ord or V verse. S quire investigated the acci dent. A lexander w as not held at th e tim e of th e accident, b ut this afternoon was taken into custody at th e sheriff's office In P o rtlan d for investigation. Instead of sow ing th e g rain , it was placed In Jars of w ater co n tain in g n ecessary food elem ents, and instead of su n lig h t, electric light w as applied for 16 h ours a day. U nder th ese conditions a fine grade of w heat was m atu red In 13 w eeks instead of the usual four to five m onths. It was found th a t w hen the n o r m al su n lig h t exposure of eight hours was doubled by elec tric lig h t for 16 hours, th e developm ent of th e w heat w as m ultiplied by four.
