The very la test and best in mo- tordom w ill be on exhibit. The show includes th ree g re a t d ep a rt m ents, autom obiles and tru c k s, a ir planes and m otorboats. T he ex hibits w ill cover m ore th a n 160,- 000 sq u a re feet of space. In point of num ber of en tries it w ill be a full th ird la rg e r th a n the last show in 1925. From C alifornia, from Chicago, from all over the co u n try exhibits a re now rollin g to w ard s P ortland. Some a re com ing by air and some by express. From C alifornia alone th e S h asta Lim ited w ill d rag in a l m ost a t the zero hour of th e open ing of th e show 10 carlo ad s of ex hibits, w hich a re being removed from the San F ran cisco show ahead of tim e to m ake P o rtlan d . The large Ryan plane w hich Tex R ankin w ill show has left southern C alifornia. R ankin has stops to m ake on th e way, b ut w ill arriv e in P o rtlan d to n ig h t in tim e to get placed a t th e m am m oth exhibit building. T his ship w ill be th e finest plane yet seen in P o rtlan d , w ith a capaci ty of eight passen g ers. A casu al survey of th e value of exhibits to be on display a t th is show indicates th a t it is th e m ost valuable collection ever placed on display in P o rtlan d a t any kind of an exhibit. The new fire department is now well organized and training for the most effective service when needed. The boys ask for and are entitled to the most hearty support of the community. They are ready to do their best. T he exam ination of an old d irec to ry of th e M ultnom ah & C lacka m as County M utual T elephone Co., whicli w as p u rch ased by th e O re gon T elephone Co., gives rise to some in te restin g com parisons and bits of h istory. T his list, th o u g h t to be th e first telephone d irecto ry issued by th e local com pany in book form , w as p rin ted by th e O ut look in A ugust, 1913, and co n tained 697 nam es of w hich 523 w ere cu sto m ers of the G resham ex change and the b alan ce of C orbett and D am ascus. In th e new d irec to ry th e re a re listed 1135 su b sc rib ers in th e G resham and Sandy ex changes. M any changes have tak en place in th e p ast n early 15 years. T he first directo ries issued by th e Mu tu a l com pany, w ere p rin ted on a card. The com pany w as organized in 1906 by citizens of th is vicinity who realized th e need of telephone com m unication in th e upbuilding of th e d istrict. Among th e su b sc rib ers to th e phone service in 1913 w ere four saloons, five livery b arn s and tw o garages, located in G resham , S an dy, Boring and T ro u td ale. T he lo cal com pany th en had tw o lines to Sandy and d u rin g 1914 or 1915 bought out th e com pany o p eratin g in Sandy. T he tw o g arages w ere th e G resham Auto Supply Co., owned by L ato u rell & Son, and the G resham G arage, of w hich C. M. Zim m erm an w as ow ner. They w ere ad v e rtise rs in th e d irecto ry , as w as also th e W ithrow & B utcher s a loon. T he livery sta b le s a re extinct, and th e g arag es a re h ere in fa r g re a te r num bers. T he saloon is no m ore. A grow ing profession lis t ed now, b ut u n h eard of th en , is re p resen ted by th e beauty shop. G resh am h as four, all very dependent on th e telephone. All of th e G resham business houses except tw o have new n u m b ers and are, in m ost cases on p ri v ate lines. Today, m ost of th e business firms not only have a p riv ate line, h ut many have an extension w hereby it is possible to ta lk from tw o loca tions In th e sto re or office. Many residences also have p riv ate lines. E ver sin ce it w as sta rted , in 1911, th e O utlook h as had a p riv ate line, and d u rin g th e p ast few y ears one extension. In th e new d ire c t ory the Outlook is listed w ith two p rivate lines. They a re so fixed th a t it is possible to sw itch calls from one line to th e o th er In th e Outlook office. T his is believed to b e th e first In stallatio n of th is kind ever m ade in G resham by th e local com pany, although a firm at T ro u t dale has tw o phones on p a rty lines w ith a sim ila r sw itch in g a rra n g e ment.
