GRESHAM ÜTTLOOK, F R ID A T , SEPTEM BER TROUTDALE KH/.UEA SIGNALS WITH FLAMING LAVA RETURN OF FE-LE, GODDESS OF PLENTY Hawaiians R e j o i c e When Volcano W hich Has Long Entranced Visitors Flares Forth W ith New Beauty. F IERY lava has returned to Hawaii National Park! L ast month, K ilauea Vol cano, the park ’s ste lla r attraction, flared to the sta rs for the first tim e since 1920, and H aw aii's greatest to u rist attractio n is again putting on its nightly show, to the delight | ....... • Kilauea Is 4.000 feet high on the slopes of Mauna Loa, which reaches a height of 13,675 feet. The retu rn of lava to K ilauea brought on a great celebration by native H aw aiians. The fire in the pit m eans th a t th eir goddess. Pe-le, has returned, and th a t prosperity will come with h er to stay. N atives all day long were making sacrifices a t the flrepit on July 7 by throw ing many herbs and various tokens sa cred to the fire goddess into the fire and fumes below. W ithin a few m inutes afte r the flow had been sighted by the w atch man at the Volcano House the V' Looking into crater of Kilauea Volcano. Above— Smoke cloud rising two miles high. and awe of visitors from every part of the world. Based on past per form ances of Kilauea, the activity should continue for at least six m onths or a year. The fire disappeared from Kilauea In 1920 following high activity du r ing p art of th a t year, and although there was a brief return of lava to the flrepit in 1923. last m outh's flow was the first im portant re sumption of activity in almost <«¥60 years. whole countryside was lighted up by the brilliant glow. Four huge fountains, each spurting molten rock two hundred feet high, held spectators spellbound. H alem aum au, tirepit of Kilauea, is 1,350 feet deep, although the lava soon filled up at least a hun dred feet. Spectators stand on the brink in perfect safety and look down at the living lava glowing white-hot and red-hot a thousand feet below. “The scene a t night is beautiful beyond description,” says a new s story In the Hilo Tribune-H erald. "T he fountains are by far the m ost awesome part of the spectacle. Thousands of fragm ents of red-hot rock are periodically flung out like a giant skyrocket. Jagged lava cracks open up in the black mass, exposing the red-hot molten rock below. The p attern of the cracks Is constantly changing.” ered to su it th e d riv e r’s individual I’leasant View Avenue requirem ents.
