We h ate to do it because we like both dogs and ca ts though we have neither. But since they c a n 't be train ed to obey th e law th ey have to be com pelled and it seem s some people have to be com pelled to com pel th e dogs. So fa r th e m a r shal h asn ’t done m uch com pelling and citizens a re put to th e test of reason and good judgm ent. T here a re pet lovers and pet ab- horers. As in reg ard to o th er m a t te rs, th e re a re ex trem ists in th is m atter. Some c a n 't b ear to house up a cat or dog and would let them have th e ir freedom even if they do d estroy th e ir neighbors g ardens, peace and happiness. Some would abolish the useless v arm in ts en tirely. C hildren love pets and should have them —not th a t all who love them a re children, though some th in k it is a childish tra it. But Fido m u st stay at home and Bingo m ust not m arau d and both m u st he ta u g h t to be silen t, r e spectable and gentle. We m ight say th a t all who let th e ir canine pets ru n a t larg e w ill be arre ste d or have th e ir an im als im pounded. T h a t would be effect ive, if true. T he m ost we can say u n d er th e circum stances is th a t if all would apply th e Golden R ule to th is p e r plexing problem th e re wbuld be no fu rth e r ground for com plaint on the p a rt of any. S unday afternoon in G resham w as m arked by an autom obile acci dent w hich occurred a t th e in te r section of Main and Pow ell stre e ts w hen th e F ord coupe driven by C lair G uliikson w as stru c k by E lsie W inters driving a F ord touring. No in ju ries to occupants w ere reported b ut both m achines w ere ready for th e garage. G uliikson had tu rn ed east from Main stre e t w hen he w as crow ded y, one side by th e W inters ca r which w as proceeding w est on Powell street. T he re a r ju c le and disc w heel of th e coupe w ere sp ru n g and fender and runn in g board put out of shape. In addi tion the left door w as broken and a rig h t tire blow n out. T he P o rt land ca r w as left at a local garage and th e four occupants forced to ta k e a m otor stage home. Mr. and Mrs. Roy H ow ell, th e form er em ployed on the prem ises of th e Louise hom e on th e B arker road, w ere pinned beneath th e ir F ord ro a d ste r Sunday m orning at th e in tersection of Base L ine and B ark er roads as th e re su lt of a collision w ith a ca r on th e Base Line. Both Mr. H ow ell and his wife w ere painfully but not seriously in jured. Mrs. H ow ell w as rem oved to the em ergency hospital w here nine stitch es w ere tak en in a foot, w hich w as cu t badly. She w as able la te r to be tak en home. Mr. H ow ell's glasses w ere broken and one of his hands cut. T he H owell ca r, w hich w as a new one, w as badly w recked. It tu rn ed en tirely over and it seem s a m iracle th a t Mr. /ind Mrs. Howell escaped serious injury. T he top of th e ca r w as to rn to pieces, the w indshield sm ashed into bits and one w heel dam aged beyond repair. Mr. and Mrs. Howell had sta rted to ch u rch a t L ents w hen struck. It is rep o rted the ca r w hich stru ck them w as trav e lin g a t a high ra te of speed. E. LA GRANDE PREPARES EDR LEGION MEETING Among th e visito rs at th e A m eri can Legion sta te convention a t La- G rande, Ju ly 21, 22, and 23, w ill be Legion m em bers from several Idaho cities. Until recen tly th e dates of th e convention of Idaho ami Oregon w ere the sam e, but, in order to be w ith us a t th a t tim e, Idaho legionares have set ahead the date of th e ir convention one week. This co-operative action on the p a rt of the Idaho Legion is a big factor in a ssu rin g th e success of “T he B attle of ’27” at La G rande. Besides oth er visiting m em bers, th e re w ill be tw o bands and a drum corps from W eiser, and an o th er drum corps from Caldwell. T he Oregon convention is now assu red of delegates from both Idaho and W ashington, and one of the best conventions in th e h isto ry of the Legion is expected to resu lt. It goes w ithout saying th a t every one in La G rande is giving e n th u siastic support to the w ork of p re p aring for th a t occasion. City Mail Delivery Seems to Be Remote City mail delivery for G resham seem s to be rem ote, judging from a le tte r received by Miss E. E. Jo h n son, local p o stm aster, asking for a rep o rt on conditions here follow ing an application recently tiled by Re corder C. G. Schneider for the city. A ccording to th e le tte r it ap p ears th a t only one condition is fully inut at th is tim e, th a t of th e gross receip ts of th e office, w hich am ount to m ore th an $10.000 y ear ly. The d ep a rtm en t has established a m inim um population of 2500. However, w here the population does not equal 2500, village deliv ery m ay be established, provided it is ad equate and m eets th e needs of the office. T he required pop ulation in each in stan ce m ust re side w ithin te rrito ry having con tinuous sidew alks, cross w alks, stre e t lights and signs, and build ing lots m ust be 50 per cent im proved, th a t Is, houses erected and occupied on at least one-half of th e building lots. It would seem th a t th e w ise thing for the city to do would be to proceed w ith th e necessary prep ara tio n s, w hich would be all in th e line of m uch needed im provem ents and w hich would go far tow ard a t tra c tin g added population which in a few y ears would probably en title th e city to free delivery. BASEBALL TEAM TO PLAY SALEM HIGH Salem high school baseball team is scheduled for a gam e w ith th e local nine on S tapleton field next F riday afternoon beginning a t 3 o'clock sharp. W hile G resham has a good stro n g team th is year, hav ing won over F ra n k lin high and Oregon In stitu te of Technology w ith scores of 13 to 4 and 9 ,to 8 respectively in th e first tw o gam es of th e season, it will have an a n tag o n ist th a t is up and going at th e first s trik e of the bat. The Salem boys won over Lincoln high 17 to 1 two w eeks ago, and last week they defeated the (). A.C. college frosh 16 to 6 in a spirited contest.
