GRESHAM OUTLOOK, Mrs. Hannah Johnson Celebrates Birthday (By G. N. Sager.) A delightful p a rty w as that w hich w as en tertain ed at th e home of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. D ahlquist last Sunday, it being th e occasion of Mrs. H an n ah Jo h n so n 's 91st b irth d ay. A sum ptuous re p a st was served in recognition of th e event. T h e candles on th e b eautiful b irth day cake w ere arran g e d to re p re se n t th e num ber 91. F o u r g en e ra tio n s w ere represen ted a t th e g a th ering. T hose p rese n t w ere'M r. and Mrs. E. R. Johnson and daughter, Mrs. L ucille M arkell of G resham , Mr. and Mrs. Wm. D ahlquist, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. D ahlquist and little d au g h ters, Naomi and Nora, all of th is place. Over 75 of Mrs. Jo h n so n ’s 91 y ea rs have been spent in Oregon, and in th is im m ediate vicinity. Log houses w ith th e ir old fashioned Are p laces th a t w ould ta k e in a back log so large th a t it w as necessary to ro ll it into place, w ere th e rule in those early days. Ox team s w ere th e chief pow er for tra n sp o rta tio n and tw o days w ere required to m ake th e trip to P o rtlan d and re tu rn . B arn and house raisings, ap p le parings, and spelling bees w ere the m ost conspicuous events on th e calendar. Schoolhouses w ere few and fa r betw een and churches w ere sc arce r th a n schools. The c irc u it rid er w as th e m in ister in those days, and services w ere held in th e schoolhouse and often in th e hom es of the people. Much of the clo th ing w orn in those days was spun on the spinning w heel, and woven on a hand loom in th e home. C om pared w ith th e present, w hat a m ighty tra n sitio n is to be noted in one perso n ’s lifetim e. In pro ductive e n te rp rise th e w orld ad vanced a thousand y ears u nder the o b serv ation of G randm other Jo h n son d uring h er life of 91 years. T h ro u g h o u t h er long life she has diffused a sp irit of kindliness, c h a rity and love am ong her friends and neighbors. Crow ned w ith her long y ears of u p rig h t ahtl sincere life, children of four g enerations rise up and call h er blessed. And w hat is g ran d e r and nobler th a n a rip e old age filled w ith y ears of u p rig h t and honorable purposes and accom plishm ents? “In com parison w ith it th e rich es of C roesus seem like dross. In com parison w ith it w hat th e world ca lls fam e seem s like w ithered leaves. In co m p ari son w ith it an em p o re r’s crow n seem s like a bauble." D espite h er y ears Mrs. Johnson possesses p erfect health and stre n g th , can ta k e ca re of h er own household duties and in sists upon doing so. H er m any friends join w ith th e home folks in w ishing her m any m ore happy an n iv ersaries. FAIRVIEW T he annual m eeting of th e W om en ’s society of th e Sm ith M emorial P re sb y teria n ch u rch w ill be held T hursday, M arch 24, at th e home of th e president, Mrs D. W. McKay, beginning at 2 o'clock. T he elec tion of officers and paym ent of dues will first ta k e place, followed by a social hour and refresh m en ts. D oryland enjoyed a v isit from h er m other, Mrs. Sam uel M ueller of M ontavilla, last S a tu r day. It w as also th e second b irth day of little Jack ie D oryland. Mrs. D oryland's youngest dau g h ter. The little m iss received a num ber of gifts and also a num ber of "w h ip p ings” to celebrate her birthday. Haley Baptist Services. The H aley B ap tist Sunday school will convene a t 10 a. m. Sunday, follow ed by the m orning w orship in Swedish at 11 o’clock. Mrs. S piers has been aw ay from Oregon about eight y ears and is glad to get back. The fam ily intends locating in O re gon again.
