THE ORANGE ON FARM RELIEF. We n atu ra lly look to th e grange to solve or m aterially help to solve the problem of farm relief. Being an organization of farm ers and those m ost interested in th e prob lems of ag ricu ltu re, and also a n a tional organization, free from sec tionalism and politics, it can g a th er Inform ation aud study condl tlons thoroughly and im partially and recom m end w hat would be m ost fair and favorable. T he N ational G range a t its re cent session in P o rtlan d , Maine, embodies its convictions aud rec om m endations in a resolution w hich will be of in te rest to ail. It believes farm relief m ust be found chiefly along the lines of re g u la t ing production to the dem ands of the m arket and in cooperative m a r keting of products. Rut it also be lieves th a t conditions here are so different from those In foreign countries w ith which ou r products may come into com petition th a t these proposed rem edies cannot alone accom plish the desired r e sults. "We believe,” says the N ational G range, “th a t relief m ust be found along the lines of b etter m a rk e t ing and orderly and econom ic p ro duction, as form ulated in previous sessions; elim ination of w aste and a leveling of our tax burden—su p plem ented by a system of export debentures, as outlined in the fol lowing resolution; "W hereas, a g ric u ltu re is basic and the continually increasing a g ricu ltu ra l depression is affecting the prosperity not only of the a g r i cu ltu ral people hut of tlie entire nation; and “W hereas, our stap le a g ric u ltu r al products a re in w orld-w ide com petition w ith like products In o th er lands; and "W hereas, such su rp lu s products a re uot receiving the benefits of the protective tariff; therefo re, be it "R esolved th a t th e N ational G range endorse an exp o rt deben tu re plan tor farm products and recom m end th a t legislation be en acted by the next session of con gress m aking such plan operative, beginning with the 1927 crop.” I F 8 AHOUT TIME. The m ills of ju stice In th is couiv try grind slow ly In m any Im port an t cases and especially for the higherups. At last Albert H Fall and Ed ward L. Ltoheny, mixed up in the famous oil scandal of some years ago. a re brought to tria l. T heir clever atto rn ey s have taken a d vantage of every technicality in the law offering delay. T hey huve hud the advantage of stro n g political affiliations and fln an d u l support and It is safe to predict the trial will be an o th er display of legal com plication w hich w ill d rag out until in te rest is lost In the o u t come. It will be a sad condition in this country when the com mon people come to believe the co u rts give a greater advantage to th e rich and pow erful offender w hile m eting out hasty Judgm ent to th e poor and pow erless. Anything that tends to foster th is opinion is a m enace to good governm ent. Mr. Fail says he reaeuts deeply “th e hum iliation of being com pelled to ap p ear before any ju ry on such a charge," w hile interested but im partial o b s e rv e s resent equally th e delay that lias a tte n d ed bis appearan ce on such a charge.
