Thaw Is Checked
The first storm of th e season

F rid ay and th a t evening alm ost a s­
sum ed th e proportions of a silver
thaw , but on S atu rd ay m orning
th is fear w as relieved by a rise of
te m p e ra tu re although the air con­
tinued cold for th e follow ing 24
hours. G resham butte presented a
p retty sig h t S aturday m orning and
th ro u g h o u t the day w ith its m antle
of ice, coating tre e s and bushes.
Mr. and Mrs. B. O. Boswell en ­
joyed a trip up the Columbia River
highw ay Sunday afternoon and
they rep o rt th a t beginning directly
th e o th e r side of S pringdale and
con tinuing to Sum m it, a distance
of p erh ap s five m iles, th e re was
stro n g evidence of an old fashioned
silver thaw . T elephone and elec­
tric light poles and w ires w ere
down and ice covered boughs and
w ires in some places th ree inches
in thickness. T hey did not proceed
to Crown Point and around th e fig­
u re eight for fear of getting caught
on the icy highw ay w ithout proper
’ p recautions for tires.
Mr. Boswell reported th a t for
sev eral m iles scarcely a pole w as
stan d in g belonging to the Columbia
T elephone com pany.

The local telephone com pany
also experienced some tro u b le in
th e vicinity of T rou td ale w ith its
lines, p a rtic u la rly the w ires on the
hill east of T rou td ale com prising
th e w est end of B anner A cres. In
all about 35 lines belonging to the
M. & C. M utual, have been out d u r­
ing th e p ast few days, b u t th e lin e­
m en seem ingly a re m eeting th e
situ atio n and no g re a t inconven­
ience has been experienced.
Man Robbed N ear 12-Mlle C orner.

day th a t he w as held up th e p rev i­
ous evening on th e F airview road
n ea r th e T w elve-m ile co rn er and
robbed of $94, w hile changing a
tire on his autom obile. G reco said
th re e m en alighted from an a u to ­
m obile and asked him if he need­
ed any assista n ce and then p ro ­
ceeded to rob him. The m an said
th e ir ca r had no re a r license plate
and one of the robbers stood in
fro n t of th e fro n t num ber so th a t
he could n o t see it.

Vaccines have alm ost obliterated
typhoid fever—w ith the in c re ase of
know ledge in sa n ita ry precautions.
