GRESHAM OUTLOOK. FRIPAY. ■ ------------- Earthquakes Bring Suffering to Children The atten tio n of th e w orld has been focused for a few days again on the N ear E ast. Because of the earth quake w hich destroyed 37 vil lages. the g re a t o rp h an a g e of Alex- anderpol City, driving 9000 ch il dren to sleep on th e hillsides in the bitter cold of a n e a r e a ste rn w in te r; which razed flour m ills, killed live stock and b uried food supplies under tons of7 debris, th e w orld’s attention has ag ain been centered on that unhappy land. For ten y ea rs A m erica has been pouring out h er bounty to the stricken peoples of the Near E ast and the p rese n t is an opportune moment to review som e of th e re a s o n s why A merica* should aid the Near E ast peoples. Leaving as'de the d ictates of a com mon hum ani ty and recognition of the tru th th a t the stro n g should support the weak, h ere a re special claim s which th is people have upon the ch a ritab ly inclined people of the west. One tie is th a t of religion. In one of th e e a rth q u a k e w recked vil lages, E tchm iadzin, stands a ch u rch built on th e s jte of the first C h ristian ch u rc h ever built in the world. T he o rig in a l s tru c tu re was built at a tim e w hen our ancestors, the A ngles and Saxons, w ere naked savages in n o rth e rn Europe. At th a t tim e no one dared approach our b loodthirsty foreb ears w ith the gospel. It w as too dangerous. A rm enia kept th e to rch of C hristi anity burn in g u n til som eone dared to take th e gospel to those who were to becom e th e teach ers of the Anglo Saxon race. W hatever a p preciation we have of Christianity as a leveling influence in the world, we should not forget the people wljo kept 'ts light from be ing extinguished. S ituated a t th e cross roads of the w orld, A rm enia has been in the d irect p ath of th e world con- q u erers and m ig h t have m ade h e r self rich a t th e sam e price th a t Belgium m ight have been rich, by b etraying h er allie s and giving the enem y free passage through her b o rd ers w hile she furnished them, at a good price, the supplies for th e ir w arlik e expeditions. And like Belgium , she chose ex term i nation ra th e r th a n th e b etra y al of her ideals and today 'n rew ard her people are sc attered and the p re s ent g overnm ent of A rm enia covers a site th a t is b u t a fraction of her form er te rrito ry . He also sta te s th a t it w as th e stubborn de fense by th e A rm enians division of th e R ussian arm y of the p rice less oil fields of Baku th a t p re vented th e c e n tra l pow ers from se cu rin g supplies of oil. When the R ussian arm y b roke into pieces, the A rm enians stayed a t th e ir posts to defend th e ir fro n tiers, and a t th e sam e tim e prevented the oil from becom ing th e pro p erty of the c e n tra l pow ers.
