W ith b rig h t skies and a w arm sun to a llu re th e voters from their hom es, w ith several hot contests I J NOVEMBER », 1826 T W IC E A W EEK to aw aken th e ir * in te re st and a num ber of m easures on th e ballot th a t th rea ten e d to add m aterially to th e alre ad y heavy burden of ta x ation, about two out of th ree of the reg istered voters in th e local p re cin cts yielded to th e urge of patri otic duty and cast th e ir votes on T uesday for the candidates of their choice and for or again st the meas u res presented for th e ir sovereign decision. T he b allo t w as long and m any took considerable tim e to study over m a tte rs so th a t at tim es in the voting places th e re w as a w aiting line. Some voters who cculd not w ait took th e ir ballots and spread them out on th e floor or on benches and placed th e X w here they th o u g h t it belonged. In all of G resham precincts the vote w as stro n g ly republican, a v e r aging about tw o to one. The one significant exception w here the o rd er w as reversed w as in th e case of Schneider, dem ocrat, versus Myers, republican, for d istric t a t torney. In the th ree G resham pre cin cts S chneider received 419 votes to M yers’ 147. T he vote for United S tates sen ato r w as one of the closest and caused voters m ost concern. Each p artizan felt concern though ex, pressed him self as confident of his choice. W hile H aney ca rrie d M ult nom ah county by about a thousand votes, in the G resham precincts S teiw er received a few less th an H aney and Stanfield com bined.
