W illiam T aylor H artley cele brated his 95th birthday on T hursday Septem ber 16, by m ingling w ith guests who called, and taking his place at the table and doing am ple ju stice to the substan tial rem em brances of th e oc casion. Dr. and Mrs. C. W. H uett, who are soon to leave G resham , w ere luncheon guests with Mr. H artley and his son-in-law and d aughter, Mr. and Mrs. S. S. Thom pson, and In the a f ternoon his gran d d au g h ters, Mrs. Ava E dw ards and Mrs. L ottie Thom pson, of P ortland, with th e ir children called and stayed for dinner in th e evening Mr. and Mrs. Andrews, from W alla W alla, W ashington, also called d u r ing the day. They w ere on th e ir way to Salem and tim ed th e ir visit for the birthday of th e ir friend. As an indication of the m om entous changes which have taken place since Mr. H artley was a boy, he received a le tte r from his d aughter, Mrs. Ben P ilcher, of E llensburg, W ashington, on his birthday. W hile this. In itself, would be but an ord in ary event, th is p articu la r birthday le tte r cam e by air mall and is therefo re m uch prized. Mr. H artley is hi his usual good health and is a fam iliar figure on the stree ts w here his sprightly a ir and springin g step would do credit to a m an 20 years his Junior. PROPERTY OWNER SEEKS RAMAGES FOR LANR When J. N. C lanuhan retu rn ed from a sum m er's trip to Scotland a sh o rt tim e ago he w as much su rp rised to learn that th e county com m issioners had confiscated about $1,000 w orth of real estate belonging to him during his absence. In connection with tile ob taining of the rig h t of way for the proposed straig h ten in g of the Section Line road. Mr. C lanahan has retained W .1. Cooper as his attorney, who will m ake an effort to reopen th e case and secure reim bursem ent from th e coun ty for land used w ithout his consent. The m atter w as closed w ithout his know ledge or w ithout his having p re sented a claim for dumages. O ne-half of the roadw ay across four lots was taken from Ills property by (lie county when condem nation pro ceedings w ere on for the straig h ten in g of the line incident to the paving. O ther p roperty holders w ere re m u n e r ated for th eir rig h ts o f wuy, but us Mr. C lanahan was absent and no claim s w ere filed, the m atter w as declared closed.
