GRESHAM YOUNG MAN
ON 50II-MILE H IK E
A m ost unusual trip Is th a t w hich
bus been undertak en by Leslie Judd,
22-year-old son of th e Rev. and Mrs.
E. G. Judd, who th is year g raduated
from
the
Milton F reew ater
high
school. Leslie had been on a trip into
Canadian borders a year ago and wus
so delighted w ith th e wild g ran d eu r
of the country he determ ined on a
long hike this sum m er w hich should
tuke him well into th e in te rio r of
A laska.
The boy is m aking the Journey on
foot for the first 500 m iles, then will
proceed tiy train and boat from the
n o rth ern border of B ritish Colum bia
to F airbanks. T he re tu rn trip is to
he m ade tiy steam er. He left home
Ju n e 1 for the long jaunt, and a little
over a m onth la ter w as still hittin g
the tra il w hich extends n o rthw ard
through ce n tral B ritish Columbia,
the path which had been blazed by the
teleg rap h linem en for use In the e x
tension of tiler lines. Young Judd,
who Is much in terested In a g ric u l
ture. is m aking tills hike purely for
recreatio n ami th e study of his fa
vorlte p u rsu it along tills line. There
is an a g ric u ltu ra l ex perim ent statio n
located at F airb an k s and here he ex
peels to m ake an exhaustive study of
w hatever th e re may lie to offer for
his in terest and instru ctio n . He took
up an ag ric u ltu ra l course w hile in
high school and It Is his am bition to
lake a college course at Oregon A gri
c u ltu ra l college beginning eith er this
or the follow ing year.
The linem en have constructed ca b
ins at varying In tervals along tile
trail, probably 10 to 15 m iles ap art,
and these a re well equipped w ith pro
visions, bedding and stoves. Pack
tra in s visit these cam ps hut once a
year with new supplies, hence it can
lie readily seen th e ir advent is a w a it
ed with m uch an ticip atio n by those
obliged to trav el th is tra il in p u rsu
ance of th e ir duties, o r o th e rs who
m ake the Journey for o th e r reasons.
Tin- w anderer, in m any Interestin g
epistles to his p aren ts, depicts the
w onders of the scenery and incidents
of the trip. But tw o m onths of the
year render suitab le w eather for tills
hike and those d esiring to m ake it are
com paratively few in num ber. Word
is sent along from one linem an to
an o th er and when the tra v e le r a r
rives, tie is trea ted m ost hospitably.
W hile no bellboy an sw ers the ring
for hot or cold w ater and w hile a t
some of th e cabins the carp et on the
floor is th e hare ea rth and th e w in
dows are conspicuous on account of
th e ir absence, the handshake is hearty
and the sm ile cordial and a hot drink
of coffee out of a lin cup answ ers th e
purpose as well as If served from one
of D resden
T his is one of th e longest tra ils in
th e world as w ell as one of th e most
picturesque. Speaking of the m oun
tain s, Leslie says it looks as though
all of th e snow -capped peaks of the
United S tates w ere Bned up side by
aide. A year ago th is sum m er the
young m an climbed th e th ree p rin c i
pal m ountain peaks of th is locality,—
Hood. Adams and St Helens.
