Fair TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS Now je a jy ^ E v e r y o n e Is Urged to Get Ready for the Greatest Fair Ever Held at Gresham G resham O utlook CANNERY CREWS HANDLE MUCH FRUIT SKETCH OF PLANS FOR IMPROVEMENT OF MULTNOMAH COUNTY FAIR GROUNDS T hese a re days of varied in te rest and activity a t the local cannery and if th e re a re any lazy folks around th ere, they are kept busy try in g to keep out of sight. More people are being em ployed a t th e cannery this year th a n any previous year. The new receiving shed Is being taxed to cap acity to accom m odate w orkers, em pty cra te s and stacks of fru it. The peak of the stra w b e rry season has passed, 85 per cent of the b e rrie s probably having been taken ca re of. It is estim ated th a t som ething over two thousand b a rre ls of stra w b e r ries have left the shed of th e B erry G row ers P acking com pany during the p a st m onth. P erh ap s th e m ost in te restin g phase of th e w ork going on a t the cannery Ju st a t present, and th a t causing the m ost need for a level and calculating head, is th e different lines of industry going on a t th e sam e tim e. W hile stra w b e rrie s a re being hulled and p rep a re d for th e b arrels, logans and ra sp b e rrie s a re being graded for c a n ning, perhaps an o th er crew of women w o rk e rs will be p rep arin g th e same kind of b erries for b a rre ls, Royal A nns a re being stem m ed and graded for canning and an o th er crew w ill be busy a t the so rtin g m achine cleaning and a rra n g in g th e big juicy L am bert c h e rrie s for shipm ent. T he G resham cannery is estab lish ing a rep u tatio n for itself as to p le as a n t w orking conditions and su rro u n d ings. P rom th e fac t th a t th e sam e perso n s, both m en and w omen em ployes, re tu rn to the can n ery year a fte r y ear for th e sum m er season, be sp eak s for itself th e fac t th a t the w o rk ers a re appreciative of th e ef fo rts m ade for th e ir com fort and con venience. S everal women, w ho have w orked in various canneries before com ing to G resham , stated th a t the su rro u n d in g s a t th e p la n t here are m uch m ore desirable th an elsew here, especially In the m a tte r of efficient forem en and floor m anagers. It has been cu sto m ary for several y ears past to m ake up a sim ilar con trib u tio n each year to be presented to the com m ander of th e com pany for use along a g en eral line d u rin g th e period of encam pm ent. I t ls m eant as m erely an evidence of ap p reciatio n from th e business men of th e com m unity to th e men who so loyally sac rifice two weeks of th e ir tim e, In many cases from lu crativ e em ploym ent, to spend the days in ard u o u s m ilitary train in g w ith but sm all m onetary re c ompense. Those not acquainted w ith th e facts m ight be Inclined to th in k th ese encam pm ents a re m erely a m a t te r of passing aw ay a fo rtn ig h t of idleness, but those who have attended sta te th is ls far from th e tru th . Much h ard w ork is en tailed d u rin g th e tw o- week tra in in g course, espically if th e w eath er be hot as w as th e case la st year, and th e discipline is exacting to say the least.
