habit of grow th and m ethod of d is­
sem inating its seed m akes it very u n ­

However, the th istle Is well thought
of by some. It is the national flower
of Scotland. In reg ard to its origin as
such the following story Is told When
the Danes Invaded Scotland, they stole
a m arch upon th e S cottish cam p by
m arching barefoot; but a Dane Inad­
vertan tly stepped on a thistle, and his
sudden, sh arp cry, arousing th e sleep ­
ing Scots, saved them and th eir coun­
try- thus establishing the th istle as
the national flower of Scotland.
