YEAR *OLD a re elected tw ice each year. The By BESSIE G. HALLIDAY. Arboleda, a d istric t located on the Powell V alley road, h alf w ay betw een Gresham and Portland, w ill be two y ears old next m onth. D uring th e la t te r p a rt of th e y ear 1923 th e resid en ts of the vicinity met and decided to o r ganize a com m unity club. A fter some consideration th e nam e A rboleda w as selected for the d istric t and th e club was organized under the nam e of the A rboleda Im provem ent club. The nam e A rboleda is of S panish origin, m eaning a place of m any tre e s or a woodland. T his nam e was thought p articu la rly suited to th e d istric t which takes in all of the tra c t fo rm er ly known as the Coldwell Acres. At the tim e the A rboleda d istric t was nam ed and th e club organized, th e re w ere ju st 12 houses in th e whole d istrict. Since then six m odern houses and a store building have been com pleted and th ree houses a re now un der way. R easons for Club. T he A rboleda Im provem ent club was organized for several reaso n s: ttrst, to im prove the d istric t, clean it up, beautify it and keep it so; second, for a social good tim e, and th ird , to help each oth er when help Is needed and to keep alive th a t good-fellow ship fee l ing that one doesn’t feel or find in a large city. So far, the club bas proved a big success, brought about by the enthusiasm und th e w illingness to help on the p a rt of all the m em bers. Officers co n sist of a president, vice m em bership of th e club w as a t first lim ited to th e A rboleda d istric t, but a fte r some m onths p ersons outside the d istric t w ere ta k en in. About th is tim e th e club m em bership grew so larg e th a t it w as im possible to con tln u e m eeting a t the hom es of th e m em bers, as w as th e custom , an d It . was n ecessary to m ake o th er a rra n g e ; m ents. Floyd H alladay offered his g arag e building to th e clu b for use u n til arra n g e m e n ts for a clubhouse could be made. T his offer was gladly accepted and th e club fitted th e b u ild ing up inside to su it its needs and also added tw o sm all additions to th e building. T he club m em bership at th is tim e num bers ab o u t 35 and Is still grow ing. C onsideration is now being given to building a clubhouse some tim e n ex t year. T h at friendly com m unity sp irit and neighborly feeling has never died out in A rboleda, we are as one big happy family. T h at is th e secret of our su c cess as a com m unity and as a club. A rgum ents? We have lo ts of them , but they are b ro u g h t up in business m eetings before th e club and talked over and th resh ed out. Reservoir Work to Begin. The city of P o rtlan d will begin p re lim inary w ork next sum m er on the I new reserv o ir, w hich Is to be co n stru cted on W ilson H ill ju s t e a st of A rboleda and south of th e Powell V al ley road. D. Ran dall of Los A ngeles, a b ro th er of R. M R andall, p u rch ased 26 ac res of land ju s t off th e Pow ell V alley road and at th e so u th e ast b o rd er of A rboleda. The land p u rch ased is a b eau tifu l w ood land a re a an d when im provem ents are com pleted, w ill fu rn ish choice sites for homes. It is th e Intention of Mr. R andall in th e n ear fu tu re to p la t th is p ro p erty and p ut it on th e m ark et. Some of it, how ever, has been sold and two houses a re now being erected. Mrs. W. V. C hurch has p u rch ased ad ditional p ro p erty jo in in g h er place and is co n tem p latin g building houses and p lacing them on th e m ark et.
