Mr. Jo n sru d is th e oldest citizen of K elso in w hich com m unity he h a s resided for about 49 years. F or 30 y ears he served as ju stic e of th e peace u n til he w as about 75 y ea rs old. F o r a m an of his years, his h ealth is fa irly good, he w alks e re c t and his m ind and m em ory are s till keen. In an in te re stin g ta lk to th o se assem bled he told, m ostly in a h u m o ro u s vein, of th e h ard sh ip s th e ea rly se ttle rs had to endure. To get flour they w alked a d istan ce of seven m iles and c a rrie d it back. He h u m o r ously rem ark ed th a t th e soil w as ex ce lle n t when they w ere ab le to get to it, so com pletely w as th e land covered w ith big logs and stum ps. Since his beloved wife died la st fall, he p refers to live alone in a co ttag e next door to his g ran d so n . He follow s world events w ith in te re st, n ever failin g to read his daily p ap er.
