GRESHAM OCT LOOK, PAGE TWO Published every Tuesday and Friday at Gresham, Oregon, by the Outlook Publishing Co., H. L. S t Clair Editor and Manager. One year. 1160. six months, 86c. three m onths’ trial subscription, 60c. Combination rates with all the Port land Dailies. A D VERTISING R ates reasonable. Our representative w ill call. MOKE ABOUT NATIONAL DEFENSE DAY. It may seem that enough has been said about the plan to hold a National Defense Day test on September 12 but each day brings to light something new and better in explanation of the plan. We believe that the benefit to this nation of the test will depend largely on the attitude of the public mind with reference to it, hence are glad to give our readers the best thought available. We are absolutely In favor of peace and against w ar but believe also in preparedness. Major General R. L. Bullard has ex plained the purpose of the test plan in the following words: "Four years ago our congress, with th a t best of sights—backsight—took our national and World War experl ence and embodied it partially in a law of national defense. One of its provisions looked to bringing men quickly into the m ilitary service in cases of great emergency. The meth od was, I say, based upon our own national and war experience. It pro vided the m easures th at would be ta k en by the authorities of each locality a thoroughly democratic way. It au thorized committees or boards to be appointed by the governor of each state, in each region thereof, to bring people together in Buch emergency, in the regular army, in the national guard, and in the reserve. “This law has been new upon our Btatute books for four years without test or trial of any sort. It has re cently been proposed by the w ar tie partm ent, and sanctioned by the pres Ident, to make a peace-time and peace ful test of the law, to show our peo- pie the first faint steps th at they would take in case we should ever come to a w ar; and this is proposed to be had in a time of profoundest peace and to be wholly voluntary. "Along with this little test we are to give (as there always come in time of w ar) popular dem onstrations of patriotism and good will toward the country's call. Patriotic societies are Invited to take p art in public demon strations. "All of this, I say, w hether by sol dier or civilian, is to be entirely vol untary upon the part of the citizen and the public and without cost to the government, to last a half hour, an hour, or two hours or three hours as people desire. There is nothing com pulsory, there Is nothing boastful there Is nothing threatening w hatever In Its nature or purpose. It is aimed nt no particular nation and has no other Idea than self-instruction. Just as children are drilled in the school In the method of saving themselves in case of fire In their schoolhouses, or as crews of ships on every voyage are drilled In the work of saving them selves and passengers in case of wreck or fire. "Upon the announcement of this commendable and worthy plan, a g reat outcry has been raised by a few brainsick, hysterical pacifists. It would be, according to them, a "m ili taristic gesture," a "Haunt In the face of other nations," a “th reat of war," nnd what not, which would arouse and offend other nations. I assure you th at it is so trilling nnd peaceful a thing that any nation th at would re gard It as a th reat of w ar would be silly fools.” The best way to get ahead Is to use your head. Talk is cheap—sometimes—but not when you talk back to a cop. Men and motors are alike In this, both are disagreeable when they get to knocking. Bright the world would be and sunny, Life's enjoyment would be double, Cv ¿Id one only borrow money with (he ease one borrows trouble. Cutting advertising may result In reducing the cost of doing business nnd do away with the business alto gether In the course of time. A news Item announces that at the 65th convention of Orangemen held In Boston Fred Bourne was elected grand m aster of Oregon. Portland was chosen as the meeting place of th e next convention to be held In 1927. Governor Pierce has lifted the ban on hunting which was placed some weeks ago on account of the evident fire danger. The abundant rains of th e p ast week have reduced the haz ard, It Is believed, and the deer sea son is now open. AUG 1ST Ifc il IKKIGATION CONGRESS AT kl.ANATH FALLS. GRESHAM OUTLOOK Entered as eecond-class m atter March 8, 1811, at the Poetofflce at Oresharn Oregon, under the Act of March 8. 1878 FRIDAY, By Arthur Brisbane Never ‘Something for Nothing’ Nearer Perfect Bigger Returns A Surprise for Elijah. N o P o p u la tio n S c a r e . Charles Fox offers to the United States Government an engine that “consumes no gas or other fuel arid- runs forever.” The inventor says, “You ju st sta rt her up and let her flicker,” and he thinks it will bring mil lions. I t won’t bring a c e n t A Power wiser than Charles Fox, wiser even than Calvin Coolidge, won’t allow us to get “something for nothing.” T hat would be bad for us. Therefore there is no per petual motion, nothing worth hav ing, for which we don’t give effort and value in return. I t pays to develop a perfect thing, from cows to radio. Mrs. II. McK. Twombly, of New J e r sey, owns a Guernsey named Langw ater F airy, No. 97979. She looks like any other cow, but gives three tim c^ as much milk, four and a half times as much butter fa t as the average cow. Her am az ing record ju st announced is 13,605 iounds of b u tte r fa t in one year, n th a t kind of prosperity there is no speculation, no manipulating, ju st plain, simple production of w ealth through intelligent attention to breeding. f Daily the radio offers something new. This tim e it is “broadcast ing church music for rural wed dings.” The bride, trem bling, will give the last poke nt her hair, the last tug a t her veil. The sexton will “tune in,” and up she will march, in Farm ingdale, N. J., to the tune of “ Faithful and True,” played in Chicago, 111. Florida says, “ Come.” The rich will answer, “ I’m hurrying.” Have you an income? Florida offers you attractions over nnd above the fine climate. Florida intends to put into her constitution a provision th a t will exempt incomes and in heritances from all taxation. This is intended a s “a courtesy.to pros perous people from the N orth.” They will appreciate It. No death tax On Inheritance, no S tate tax on incomel Oh, Joyl Oh, rapture! Florida says, "Come to Florida. Here your income is all yours to spend. We chop off nothing and your heirs get all you leave them when you die. We won’t tax dead men.” A long tim e ago Elisha “took hold of his own clothes and rent them in two pieces,” when he saw Elijah go up in “a chariot of fire and horses of Are.” W hat are Elisha and Elijah, now in heaven, saying to each other us they see the Right Reverend Harold Roberts Carson, Bishop of the Epis copal Diocese of Haiti, calmly rid ing from one parish to another in a flying machine? The navy lends him tne flying machine and he visits places otherwise inaccessible. All th a t men can IMAGINE they can DO. Dr. Pearl, professor of biometry and vital statistics at Johns Hop kins, suys our population will be 197,000,000 in the year 2100. Thut will be our maximum and then will come a decline. With all due respect to the learned professor, any child could make as good a guess. Dr. William Allen Pusey recent ly told the American Medical As sociation th a t population would reach 175,000,000. And “with that density of population, the pressor-, of existence will become so strong th a t the death rate, particularly infant m ortality, will overtake the birth rate.” T hat is another poor guess. Under intensive cultivation, as it is now understood, the S tate of Texas alone could feed the earth's entire population, nnd th a t is at least sixteen hundred millions. There will be a thousand million human beings in THIS country, infinitely happier, richer, better o ff in every way, than any popu lation th a t ever has lived. In 124 years, since 1800, our population has risen from 5,000,000 to 112,000,000. W hat is the us« of guessing w hat will happen in the next 120 years? It would have been impossible to guess how many people this country could feed be fore harvesting machinery was in vented. Impossible before the a r rival of the tractor. Lack of food won’t lim it popu'a- tion. Men’s brains will always provide for their stomachs. P it n higher race w 11 gradually p:o- duee few er children. Disease breeding cities will be broken up by the flying machine, taking us to live on mov.n tops, where there Is fresh • The«« m ountains are not t> oe forever uninhabited. THREE KINDS. There are three kinds of people In II organisations, and ours Is no ex ception. They are the rowboat peo ple, the sailboat people, and the steamboat people. The rowboat peo ple always need to be pushed or pulled along. The sailboat people move along when a favorable wind Is blow ing. But the steamboat people move along continuously through calm or storm. They are m asters of them selves and their surroundings. We need more people of the steamboat variety. In what class are you? You do your own classifying. It Is not up to us. Possession of Mill Brings Sentence. F ran k Fehrenbacher, Springdale farm er, when found guilty In D istrict Judge D ickson’s court Tuesday of possession of a still, was fined 2150 and sentenced to 30 days In Jail. Plano Tuning. He next entered business — failed—and spent 17 years of his life paying up the debts of a w orthless partner. He was in love with a beautiful woman to whom he became engaged— and then she died. E ntering politics again be ran for congress and was badly defeated. He then tried for an appointm ent in the United State Land Office, but failed. After this he became a candidate for the United States senate and was de feated. In 1856 he became a candidate for the vice-presidency, but lost the race In 1858 he was once more defeated, this time by Douglas. In the face of all this, he eventual ly became one of the country’s great est men, If not the greatest. How would you stand In face of such setbacks? Think It over. Reason Enough.
