M errill, ow ner of th e 12- m lle house, w as sentenced in F ederal W olverton's c o u rt y esterd ay to six m onths in ja il and to pay a fine of I >250. M errill w as convicted in th e federal co u rt on ch a rg es of possessing liquor, for w hich he w as given th e fine, and on th e ch a rg e of m ain tain in g nuisance, w hich b ro u g h t th e ja il sentence. The M orning O regonian gives th e follow ing rep o rt of th e case: B a rn e tt H. G oldstein pleaded w ith th e co u rt for a tine w ithout a ja il sen tence, pointing o ut th a t M errill is 66 y ea rs of age and has been prom inent in th e p o litical life of th e city fo m any years. H e said Mrs. M errill is an invalid and th a t a jail sen ten ce for h er husband would b reak h er h eart.
