“Every normal man desires a house of his own. He does not merely want
a roof above him and a chair below him; he wants an objective and visible king
dom; a fire at which he can cook the food he likes, a door he can open to the
friends he chooses. This is the normal appetite of m a n "—Gilbert Chesterton

The yard and office is on the corner
of Powell street and Maple avenue. It
is a branch of the Jones Lumber com

on 1280 Macadam street In South
Portland is one of th e large m ills in
Portland.
J. G. Mast has been the m anager of
the plant at Gresham for the past five
years. When asked w hat is the best
way to get trad e Mr. Mast said he be
lieves the key to th a t problem is hav
ing w hat the builder needs. At the
present time, during the shortage of
cem ent, th is yard Is able to get ce
m ent through the Portland yard which
has a contract calling for a certain
num ber of car loads of cem ent to be
delivered at a specified tim e. By hav
ing all of the m aterial needed it is
easier to get a com plete order for ail
m aterial needed for the building.
D uring the t>ast year some im prove
m ents have been made a t the Gresham
plant. T hree new roofs were put on
the lum ber sheds on November 1st of
last year requiring between 8,000 and
9,000 square feet of roofing. All of
the buildings were repainted th is
spring.
"No order is too sm all or too large
to fill” is th e slogan of th e Jones
