T he O kanogan forest rep o rts th a t 39 per cent of th e ir fires were due to sm okers, while 16 fires on th e C rater forest which cost $225 to p u t o u t sta rte d from sm o k e r’s cig arette stu b s or u n extinguished m atches. T he Colville fo rest rep o rts th a t it cost $87 4 to p u t o u t 10 fires sta rtin g from sm okers, w hile th e Olympic fo r est had only one sm o k er's fire b u t th a t cost $68 to extinguish. C igars and cig arettes consum ed ev ery single day in th e year, if placed end to end, would reach from th e A t lantic to the Pacific and back ag ain ; 80,777 cig arettes and 13,835’ cigars are burned to ashes for every m inute of th e 24 hours. T he com bined to tal lengths of cig ars and cig arettes sm oked h n n u ally in th e U nited S tates ag g reg ate alm ost 2,275,000 m iles— over six tim es th e to ta l m ileage of th e n atio n 's railroads. T his le tte r, a fte r calling a tte n tio n to th e serio u s loss caused by forest fires, suggested in e rt slips in cig arette and tobacco packages as an effective m eans of fire w arning. The re su lt was d isap p o in tin g — one firm answ ered. T his year like cooperation in fire prevention was requested of 35 of th e leading tobacco m an u factu res by the N ational B oard of F ire U nder w riters B ut not a single reply was received.
