T W IC E A W EEK G resham O utlook GRESHAM, VOL. 13, NO. 77 HUMAN INTEREST COLUMBIA GORGE IS SWEPT BY STORM * T he w orst storm th a t has ever vis ited this section hit th e country last F rid ay night w hich sta rte d w ith a heavy rain d uring the nig h t and tu rn e d into a sle et storm and con tin u ed during S aturday and Sunday. N ever in th e history of th is section can any one rem em ber such condi tions. W hile th e storm was severe enough in G resham and the sections ea st of here tow ard Powell Valley and P lea san t Home, th e conditions a re n othing com pared to those at T ro u td ale, F airview and along th e Colum bia riv er highw ay. Traffic of all kinds has been held up from th e east since S aturday n ig h t and seven p assenger tra in s are rep o rted sta lle d betw een P o rtlan d and Hood River. One tra in is at B ridal Veil, one at M ultnom ah F alls, one a t O neonta G orge and the o th e rs sh u t in a t v ari ous points along th e way. C o rbett is the fa rth e s t point east w ith w hich any kind of com m unica tion could be established. R eports com ing in w ere to the effect th a t ice a foot deep covered th e highw ay. T rees are stripped of b ranches or have fallen u nder th e w eight of ice. Scarcely a telephone o r electric light pole has been left standing. F ru it trees in every place have been broken to th e ground and th e en tire com m u nity is reported to p resent an arctic atm o sphere w hich can scarcely be m agnified. T he ten-acre p rune orch ard of T. L. E vans is rep o rted as broken to the ground w ith only stu b s of trees show ing above th e ice. T he Sandy riv er is a t flood stage and a t a point above th e club house th e riv er is cu ttin g into th e bank and has alm ost reached th e pave m ent. T ro u td ale has been isolated since th e sto rm and only a few of the most venturesom e have been able to get th e re to see th e dam age. T hey re p o rt conditions the w orst in th e his tory of th e place. T he telephone lines, teleg rap h lines, fences, trees, in fact everything th a t th e w eight of ice could break down was flat on th e ground. No re ports of seriously dam aged buildings was given b u t it was said th a t build ings and stre e ts w ere alike, a g lare of ice. N ear T ro u td ale th e larg e peach o rch ard of C. M. L aF o llette, which com prises nearly 50 acres and has ju st reached th e bearing stage, has been practically destroyed h ardly a tree in all those wide fields b u t w hat has been sp lit open o r has been broken entirely down. Many o th e r o rch ard s w ere sim ilarly ruined. In som e sections th e trees w ere broken and in some places they w ere e n tire ly uprooted. S torm conditions w ere w orse near th e C olum bia riv er and th e w orst sections n ea r here w ere on th e San dy boulevard th ro u g h F airview and T ro u td ale and in th e P ark Rose, Mt. T ab o r and M ontavilla sections in P o rtlan d . T he W illam ette riv er was reported reaching flood stages last nig h t gov ern m en t re p o rts show ing a 7-foot rise in 24 hours. T he M olalla riv er is out of the banks and the C lackam as riv er which, last week could be w aded by school ch ild ren a t a point n ear Oregon City, f1s now a raging to rre n t carry in g logs and o th e r debris in its surging w aters. The C olum bia riv er at V ancouver is reported as having raised th ree feet since th e storm . At hom e Johnson creek has been covering th e flats along its course and th e road bed of th e O. W. P. line was dam aged to such an ex ten t th a t ca r service was delayed Monday. Two hundred o r m ore feet of ro ad bed were w ashed o ut a t Meadow Brook sta tio n and the track was also underm ined n ea r P alm blad sta tio n east of G resham . T he Jap an ese gard en s on th e flats n ea r th e O. W. P. depot have been covered w ith w ate r Bince Bunday. T he large celery beds are u n d er w a te r .. A. C. G uynop’s recen tly -b u ilt large chicken house is p artly u n d e r mined and is in th e m idst of a su rg ing flood. O rnam ental and fru it trees in v a r ious p a rts of th e tow n have been u p rooted o r badly broken. T he telephone system has been com pletely dem oralized by th e storm , only th e sections in tow n being in use. Most of th e lines in th e city are cable lines and have proved th e value of th a t type of construction. O ut on Powell stre e t in several places larg e ice-coated lim bs have fallen frpm th e flr trees and are hanging on th e ca bles but the lines have n o t broken from G resham to th e L u th e ra n church in Powell Valley w here th e cable lines end in th a t direction. Beyond the cables th e re are all so rts of conditions. On th e Powell V alley road th ere a re only one o r two poles standing from th e end of the cable line to E llio tt's sto re. From th e re on the w ires are tw isted and broken b u t only a few poles are down from th e re on to P leasan t Home. N orth from G resham the conditions are even w orse an d th e e n tire line, poles, w ires and all are tu rn ed over the fences and som e are en tirely u p side down in th e ad jo in in g fields People who have been over th e ro u te say th a t th e telephone lines along the Base Line road and Sandy boule vard a re all down. How conditions are in th e T ro u td ale and F airview d istric ts can hardly be estim ated be cause everyth in g is down and still covered by m any Inches of ice. More th a n 50 lines serve th a t p a rt of th e te rrito ry and these i r e all o u t of com m ission and th e re is no way of te llin g how long it will be u n til se r vice can be resum ed. T he telephone com pany will s ta rt a crew o u t W ednesday to estab lish lines ru n n in g eastw ard and expect to resto re service in a few days.
