T W IC E A W EEK G resham O utlook GRESHAM, MULTNOMAH COUNTY, OREGON VOL, 13, NO. 73 STORES WILL CLOSE ALL DAY FRIDAY A well attended meeting of the Gresham Business Men’s association was held In the City Hall, last night. By unanim ous consent of those pres ent it was decided to close for A rm is tice Day, which has been proclaimed a legal holiday by Governor Olcott. All the local stores will be closed all day, Friday, November 11. John Brown was called on to give a report of the progress being made by him in the fight to locate the 1925 Exposition near Gresham. He report ed th a t everything was going smoothly and th a t the answ er to the question naire bad been filed, but on account of cloudy w eather it had been impos sible to secure the airplane pictures. i.- This, however, will be done w ithin a few days. Mr. Brown reported th a t the Portland papers are showing con siderable in terest in the site, and ex pects th a t one of them will p rin t a tnap and story featuring the site in its New Year’s edition. The other papers have asked for maps and pictures, and some publicity is looked for soon. A letter was read in which this locality was invited to participate in a big night parade, on Wednesday, November 16, in Portland. It is plan ned to have as many fair sites as pos sible represented, as the parade is to boost the coming exposition. All who can from here, are asked to a t tend. It is hoped th a t Gresham can have 30 or 40 autos in the parade. John Brown and E. W. Aylsworth were appointed by P resident Hessel, of the Business Men’s association, to meet w ith the parade committee, in P o rt land, W ednesday, November 9. Raker, H am m ar and H ow itt, three of the seven candidates for the council were indorsed by the business men. They also have the indorsem ent of the fire departm ent. i;he business men decided to give the banquet at noon of the last day of F arm ers' week, as has been the custom the past two years. The dates for F arm ers’ Week will be Ja n u ary 16 to 21. The County has a crew at work at the gravel pit, cleaning it up and u n covering sand. They have sent out the order th a t there will be no more dum ping of rubbish in the pit. It will also be locked and in order to get gravel for any us«'. It will be neces sary to go to some one who has au th o r ity. In talking with County Commis sioner Holman recently, K. A. Miller made the suggestion th a t an inciner ator be established in the pit, and th a t on certain days rubbish would be burned, under the supervision of some one. Mr. H olman expressed him self as being in favor of such a proceedure, and told Mr. Miller he would take the m atter up w ith the other com mission ers. No word has been received from them yet indicative of th eir action on the m atter. It is the week when . especial attention is called to children’s reading and the selection of books for the child's library. Miss Norma Lee Peck, the Gresham lib ra r ian, has had a g reat deal of exper ience with children's books and child ren’s reading and. she says, ‘‘I t is a pity, the am ount of money th a t Is ex pended for books th at are read once and then cast aside. If only a part of this money were spent for more perm anent treasures which the child will grow to love and read and re read for years to come, how much wiser the investm ent.” Miss Peck recommends a list of children’s books from which to se lect for a child’s library. T his of course is only a very small list of the many available but It contains a number of the old classics.
