Ten th o u san d days have been served in ja il, and $20,000 Imposed in fines in th e courts of Oregon d u r ing th e last 12 m onths as a resu lt of th e activities of th e two s ta te agents of th e Oregon A nti-Saloon league T his is a resu lt of 1000 com plaints which th e league has received during th e year, according to W. J. H erw ig, su p erin ten d en t. The rep o rt shows 150 raids were m ade, 100 stills conflcated and de- stroyed and 100 convictions secured. In addition a la rg e n u m b er of cases are still pending in th e co u rts. H er wig estim ates th a t his ag en ts have destroyed $30,000 w orth of bootleg g ers’ and m oonshiners' p ro p erty d u r ing th e year. T he n u m b er of gallons of liquor conflcated and tu rn ed over to th e co u rts is not known. The m ain object of th e A nti-Saloon league is to create a w holesom e pub lic sen tim en t fo r law enforcem ent, explained H erw ig, W here officials are found to be enforcing th e low th e league attem p ts to m ake it still easier and m ore p opular to enforce th e law by crystallizing public se n ti m ent to upohld and back law enforce m ent officers. On th e o th e r hand, an effort is m ade to rem ove those who fail to live up to th e ir o ath of office. H erw ig has also found th a t his of fice is receiving m ore com plaints th an public prosecutors, because his agents have refused to divulge th e source of th e ir in form ation. "B elieving th a t a m ere fine is only a cheap license, we have been urging judges to im pose a heavy ja il sen tence,” H erw ig said. "T h e resu lts have been exceedingly g ratify in g , as judges all over th e sta te a re now g iv ing heavy ja il sentences. “T he league is co operating w ith o u r d ep artm en t a t W ashington in th e passage of th e bill extending n atio n al p rihibition to every A m erican in all cou n tries w here th e U nited S tates is represented. This will prev en t any A merican from engaging in th e liq u o r business in China, Jap an and all o th e r co u n tries w here o u r govern m ent is represented. T he passage of th is bill will be a trem en d o u s victory.
