The W. C. T. U. d in n er last W ed­
nesday was a g litte rin g success. The
m ain room of th e gran g e h all was
filled w ith sm all tables, each pre­
sided over by a “ W hite R lbboner,”
assisted by tw o young ladies whose
deftness in ta b le d ecorations and
serving, beggars description.
T he m enu as adv ertised was
served. T he k itch en force like th e
dining room o p erato rs, was m ade up
of experts. C ro q u ettes w ere cooked
and served piping h ot w ith v eg et­
ables, pickles and d ain ty salads. T he
F ish e r M illing com pany don ated th e
flour o u t of w hich th e G resham
baker, T. Van D oninck, m ade those
delicious P a rk e r House rolls, over
w hich everyone exclaimed.
T he large pieces of pie w ith a su p er
generous covering of ice cream will

PUBLIC IS URGED TO HELP
MULTNOMAH COUNTY FAIR
ON ITS FEET FINANCIALLY
W ith th e refu sal of the county com m issioners to come to th e assistance
of th e M ultnom ah County F a ir it has become necessary for th e fa ir associa­
tio n to m ake an appeal to th e public for help T he only financial support
th is y ear and fo r th e fu tu re as fa r as can be seen is th e an n u al tax fund of
$3,500 w hich m ust be used fo r prem ium s. T h at sum is not larg e enough
by one-half. O rdinarily it is n o t larg e enough to pay th e livestock
prem ium s.
A p ersisten t effort is being m ade, it appears, to get th e fair aw ay from
G resham . T h a t idea may have had some influence w ith th e budget com ­
m ittee in refu sin g to give th e fa ir th e financial su p p o rt it is en tttled to.
All th e o th e r counties in th is sta te and in W ashington a re receiving b e tte r
su p p o rt th a n th is one— and th is is one of th e rich est counties in th e whole
n o rth w est.
It is up to th e people now to keep th e fa ir a t G resham and to keep it
alive and flourishing.
T h at indebtedness of $19,000 m ust be liq u id ated in som e way. T he sale
of th e new stock issue of $15,000 will not q u ite do it b ut It will come close
enough to give th e present sto ck h o ld ers g rea t en couragem ent and p u t th e
in stitu tio n on a firm foundation. T he money to be raised will go to pay off
; som e of th e debts and a successful fa ir th is y ear will in su re a la rg e r and
b e tte r fa ir next year. The w hole m a tte r is in th e h an d s of th e people. If
they w ant to keep th e fa ir h ere they m ust come to its rescue.
Soliciting for su b scrip tio n s to th e capital stock will be continued with
th e expectation th a t th e new issue of 3000 sh ares will all be sold
The
salv atio n of 'th e fa ir depends upon raising th e money needed to put the
association out of debt and th e money will be used for th a t purpose. T here
a re m any prom ises of su p p o rt and q u ite a n u m b er have alread y subscribed.
A la rg e r num ber of stockholders will cre ate m ore in te rest and p u t new
energy in th e fair. O ther d irecto rs will be chosen in some instances and
new ideas will certain ly be a g reat help, as th e conditions change and the
county developes.

tory for the m a n u factu re of spindles,
sh u ttles, baskets, boxes, and various
wood novelties.
T he proposition as to a site did

opinion agreed th a t it appeared to be
a safe plan and th a t th is was an ideal
location.
One of its m ain advantages is th a t

wood used, which is Oregon maple,

conies from th e co untry east of here.

POTATO CLUBS HOLD
JUDGING CONTEST
At the mass meeting of East of the
Sandy clubs which was held at Corbett
High School last Friday, the members
of the potato club took p art In a po­
tato fudging contest. Sixteen out of
the tw enty members participated.
Splendid work was done by th e boys
v ho were divided In’o two groups,
first and second year boys, were
formed and the result of experience
was evident when It was found that
the first year boys averaged 35 m is­
takes while the second year boys on­
ly averaged twelve.
This Is the first potato club In the
state to take up Judging as extensively
as the east of Sandy club is doing.
Mr Lasley visited O rient last week
and gave Instructions to the boys
there. These boys are keen wide
awake lads and are striving to win the
state honors
