Mrs. Van Doninck says th a t the people of th is cou n try can not realize w hat th e w ar has m eant to people in Europe. Even now a fte r these years one has to have a pass to go from one tow n to an o th er and she isn ’t ju st su re w hat would happen if one d id n 't have a pass for they were careful to keep th eirs on hand. She also m arvels a t th e way the natives can find th e ir way ab o u t in A ntw erp for th e stre e ts are so w inding and end so ab ru p tly th a t it is Impossible for an inexperienced person to find th e ir way about. T here are no cities in A m erica th a t can com pare w ith A ntw erp fo r crooked stree ts according to Mrs. Van Doninck. She found th a t th e re was a good deal of E nglish spoken th e re and a g reat deal of F ren ch . D uring her four m o n th s’ stay she was able to pick up e n o u g h of th e F lem ish la n g uage to enable h e r to get along very r.icelv. Mr. Van D oninck expressed a good deal of su rp rise a t the am ount of English spoken by th e I Belgians and especially am ong th e children.
