The hordes of little silv er fish began com ing up th e Sandy riv er last F riday evening and by S aturday m orning w ere in full tide. This is said to be th e la rg e st run th e natives have ever seen. C ertainly it is the largest for m any years. T he fish are running n ea r th e banks and can be cau g h t In th e hands. T he crow ds have been th e largest th a t T ro u td ale has ever had fo r the fam e of th e wee fishes grow s g re a t e r every year. It is so easy to get them th is year and th e sport is so fine th a t m ore th a n ever people have been flocking to see them and to get th e ir share. It is reported from T ro u td ale th a t th e sm elt a re crow ding o u t on a sa n d b a r in the riv e r and thousands of pounds of sm elt are dead o r dying on th e sand b a r ju s t from being crow ded out of th e w ater. Any place w here th e re is an o bstruction in the w ate r they begin to pile up. People a re carrying them off by the sack, th e box or any o th e r co n tain er which is available. Traffic was blocked for a m ile on both sides of T ro u td ale Sunday and by 10 o’clock th e m otorcycle police w ere tu rn in g th e crow ds back as every available place was crowded w ith p arked cars. T he banks of th e riv er w ere ju st black w ith people fishing o r w atching th e sport. T he fish are still ru n n in g and are expected to continue fo r several days. They are up to th e au to club gro u n d s n ear the upper Sandy bridge and th is is unusual since they seldom go so fa r up th e river.
