Nov. 11, 1919. E d ito r G resham O u tlo o k :— " I lli nois G overnor P residential Timber says B aily.” You have probably read the fore going headlines in th e Morning Ore gonian on page 16 of O ctober 31st T hough th e g rea t things of a little new spaper and a little tow n and i little m an are little, I am asking the hom e e d ito r to do no little thing, nor idle thing, by decorating the first page of th e G resham Outlook with sim ila r headlines. You may ask w hat th ere Is besides my word fo r this assurance. My answ er, not wholly facetious, is. th a t you need nothing more. Do I know why the Illinois senator told th e people of P ortland th at Gov e rn o r F ra n k O. Low den is presiden tia l tim b er? I will say that 1 do, for I have know n th e man Lowden and his ca re e r in general ever since and before he g rad u a ted from th e Iowa S tate J U niversity in 1885. Do 1 actually know th at he will be th e next chief m ag istrate of the n a tion? 1 m ust say th at I do not. N either did th e man Job actually know, when he said, "I know th a t^ . y redeem er llv e th ;” but his abiding faith and ex. alted reasoning were akin to know l edge, and no one yet, of all th e ages, has ever charged, or had reason to charge, th a t he m ade an extravagant statem en t. Such know ledge on th e p art of the people of Iowa and Illinois, and fo r m er low ans en title them to say with th e confidence of Job that th e pres ent governor of Illinois will be the next president of the United States They know th a t th e citixer.s of other sta te s, who do not know, will b e . pleased to know and will in due tim e | learn w hat the hom e states already^ know, and w hat Is enough to know, th a t th e ir man Lowden is Lincoln and Roosevelt tim b er of th e second grow th. We all know th a t, how ever g reat may have been the m istakes m ade in the choice of a presid en t in the past, no m istak e no r m is-deal m ust now be m ade, if th e great Republic be not reduced to a sm all one o r cease to exist as a nation of o rd er and inde pendence as well as individual and n atio n al prosperity. E veryw here it is practically conceded, as it seems to me, th a t the next president will not be party m ade, nor new spaper m ade, no r money m ade, n o r eastern nor w estern m ade, nor m ade in B ri tain no r G rem any: b ut th a t he will come from th e m elting pot of A m er ica’s one hun d red m illion people, not excluding Its politicians who are throw n in.
