There seem ed, how ever, to be much on the m in d s of som e p re s ent and the o p p o rtu n ity to p resent some topics of g e n e ra l w elfa re was too good to let pass. J u d g e S taple- ton was especially im p re ssed witti the need of speedy an d en e rg etic action in reference to th e housing necessity in G resham . The com m ittee a p p o in te d at the meeting of th e b u sin ess m en last week was not rea d y to p re se n t a formal report b u t s ta te d th ey w ere still investigating. I t w as th o u g h t there was need fo r im m e d ia te action and the com m ittee w as a sk ed to fo r mulate a plan and re p o rt a t a c iti zen’s meeting on T h u rs d a y n ig h t of this week. T he m e etin g w ill be at the Masonic hail, u n d e r auspices of the business m en’s asso cia tio n , but It is a public, m e etin g an d every one with any in te re st in th e g ro w th of the city and lo cality an d keeping here of such in d u strie s as we have and preparing th e w ay fo r o th e rs is most urgently in v ite a to a tte n d . Avery in te re stin g d iscussion of th e local telephone s itu a tio n was p re cipitated when C o n stab le S quire asked why it sh o u ld be n ecessary for him to pay out of h is ow n pocket a night call when it p e rta in e d to the peace and w elfare of th e city, or why the m arshal sh o u ld pay p e r sonally for a call w hen n ecessary at night to call th e co n stab le. Many took occasion to v en t th e ir pent up feeings in re g a rd to th e te le phone service in g e n e ra l h u t were somewhat calm ed w hen told th a t the company had o rd e re d a seven th o u s and dollar sw itch b o a rd , th e d elin quency of w hich h ad been delayed, but when in stalled w ould give a lo cal line service th e sam e in c h a ra c ter as given in P o rta n d . T h e te le phone company in m a k in g p re p a ra tion for the in sta lla tio n of th is new board which will reliev e th e conges tion and im prove th e service. The m eeting passed a reso lu tio n uking the te le p h o n e com pany to suspend the u su al n ig h t c h a rg e for necessary calls of th e m a rsh a l or constable when th e y used th e lines for the duties of th e ir office.
