and e x tra room is occupied.
T he ju v en ile livestock d e p a rt­
m ent and in d u stria l club w ork are
said to be aw ay beyond an y th in g
ever seen in O regon, even a t th e
s ta te fair.
H undreds of chickens are crow ing
over th e ir blue ribbons. In n u m e r­
able rab b its and h are s are exhibited
th is year. In fact, th e p o u ltry de­
p artm en t fa r su rp asses th a t of fo r­
m er fairs.

saws, etc., are being o p erated con­
tinuously.

ful. T he county exhibits, th e new

U pon O regonians.
The people of Oregon a re u rged by
G overnor Olcott to join w ith th e peo­
ple of th e o th e r sta te s in a celeb ra­
tion and observance of "C o n stitu tio n
d ay ” on W ednesday, S eptem ber 17.
T he o b serv atio n of th is day is be­
ing a g itated th ro u g h o u t th e U nited
S tates by the N ational Securities
league, of which Mrs. R o b ert S. M ur­
phy of E ugene, is d irec to r for O re­
gon. In an open le tte r ad d ressed to
th e people of Oregon today, th e gov­
ern o r says:
" I t appeals to me as peculiarly
fitting th a t follow ing th e cessation
of th e g re a t w ar in which o u r nation
played such a p ro m in en t an d g lo ri­
ous p art, th a t we should pause on
th is one day of th e y ear a t le ast to
pay som e trib u te to th e m em ory of
o u r fa th e rs who gave us such a price­
less h eritag e in th a t docum ent which

M onday, S eptem ber 15, 1919 is a
histo rical day for G resham . P ioneer
sto rie s 50 years hence will no doubt
con tain an account of th e visit of
P re sid en t W ilson. We of the hour
were im pressed, but to w hat extent
we will be able to tell m ore a c c u ra te ­
ly in years to come, when th e su p e r­
ficial has passed aw ay, prejudice
vanished and th e real only rem ains.
E arly th e tow n filled w ith people
ea g er to get a glim pse of th e P re si­
dent. A utom obiles by the h undreds
w ere p arked in th e in n e r circle of
th e race course. T he s tre e ts leading
to th e fa ir g ro u n d s w ere lined with
sp ectators. T he grounds, th e race
tra c k s and th e g rand sta n d surged
w ith a th ro n g all w atchful w aiting.
As th e tim e approached for th e
official p arty to appear, th e very air
grew charged w ith tenseness. Voices
becam e h ushed w ith expectancy.
T hen, as if on w ireless, sped the
new s th a t they w ere com ing. A lmost
im m ediately th e autom obiles sw ung
in sig h t, and th e re w as Woodrow
W ilson, th e P re sid en t of th e U nited
S tates w ith his charm ing wife, the
F irs t Lady of the L and, seated by
him.
Quickly they circled th ro u g h the
fa ir grounds, and nodding to the peo­
ple assem bled to do them honor.
Only a m om ent did they ptruse a t th e
g ran d stand to accept a b ouquet of
roses, a fittin g 'sy m b o l of an ard e n t
g ree tin g from M ultnom ah county.

Such was th e fleeting visit to
