CHRISTMAS NUMBER, 1918 LEGENDS OF THE MISTLETOE A NCIENT MYTHOLOGY. According to S candinavian m ythol ogy, Loki, the god of evil, was the sw orn enem y of B aldur, th e god of light, and tried by every m eans in his pow er to kill him , but failed be cause he was in v u ln erab le to ev e ry th in g th a t cam e from the e a rth , air, fire o r w ater. unto d eath , but when he found it he touched th e sap, w hile cu ttin g the branches, and fell dead n ea r the i tree, in d icatin g th a t th e sap was a deadly poison. A n o th er legend acco u n ts for the fact th a t th e p lan t is a p a ra site by the story th a t th e m istletoe, o riginally | grew , as a tree, and th a t th e cross o-i which C h rist was crucified was m ade from m istleto e wood, a f te r w hich it was accursed and condem ned to never m ore grow as a tree but to exist as a parasite, k illin g every living thing to w hich it becam e attach ed .
