MULTNOMAH FRANCHISE LAST EVENING IS GRANTED IN TENT WITH TO GAS CO. CHAUTAUQUA A fra n ch ise was g ra n te d th e P o rt lan d Gas & Coke com pany by the G resham council on T uesday even ing, th u s a ssu rin g th e people a su p ply of gas for cooking, h ea tin g and o th e r purposes as soon as th e com pany can reach here w ith th e ir m ains an d pipe th e tow n. T he fran ch ise is fo r 25 years. i t has been sta te d th a t when the com pany secures 170 consum ers any w here ea st of th e city lim its th a t th e ra te s will be th e sam e as P o rtlan d ra te s w ith a m inim um of one dollar a m onth. T h a t s ta te m e n t was m ade to the council by th e re p rese n tativ e of th e com pany who was here asking for th e franchise. T he com pany has been m aking surveys along th e county roads and th ro u g h th e stre e ts of G resham to de te rm in e th e m ost p rac tica b le ro u te for th e ir m ains. It is rep o rted th a t they will com e into the city along ihe co unty road th a t will fu rn ish the m ost subscribers. It is even said th a t th e Base Line has been selected as th e best owing to th e la rg e r population along th a t road, an d th a t th e m ain will tu rn so u th w a rd to G resham on Stanley avenue, th en ce to Pow ell stre e t and in to th e tow n along th a t th o ro u g h fare. T he p lans are n o t definitely know n in reg ard to an y th in g , b u t it is p re sum ed th a t very lib e ral concessions will be m ade reg a rd in g in stallatio n of pipes in to buildings, as a consid era b le use of gas is encouraged for cooking and h ea tin g as well as for lig h tin g . Gas com pany m ains on th e Base L ine are alread y laid as fa r as V en tu ra P ark , and it w ould ta k e only ab o u t five m iles of pipe to reach G resham . It is believed th a t m any farm ers along the way o u t would ta k e th e service and th a t Rockwood would fu rn ish a nu m b er of good cus tom ers. I t is believed th a t pipe ex ten sions will be m ade as far as 500 feet o r m ore for a consum er, hence people living on m any of th e cross roads can get the benefit of the service. C h a u ta u q u a closes to n ig h t with th e appearan ce of th e H aw aiian q u in te t. T he six days th a t have been given up to C h a u ta u q u a pro gram s have been each an epoch in G resham 's h isto ry , an d th e in sp ira tion th a t p rom pted th e appearance h ere of th e E llison-W hite system will be the m oving sp irit to continue the C h au ta u q u a as an in stitu tio n next year and every y ear th e re afte r. All th e pro g ram s have been in te re stin g and it would be h ard w ork to pick out th e best. T he choice would depend on th e te m p erm e n t of the chooser, for som e are p a rtia l to lectures, o th e rs to m usic, and th e re is scarcely a person who would be critic enough to pick o ut th e best. C ards w ere circ u lated am ong th e audience for sig n a tu re s to pledges. In a few m inutes th e sum of $4 55 was pledged for season tick ets. E veryone signed freely and w illingly, an d th e e n tire audience voted fo r a co n tin u ance a n o th e r season.
