found congenial com pany and a good
hom e In his lust years.
Y ears ago he m a rrie d th e widow
of Jam es P ain te r, living n ea r Crown
Point. She ow ned a piece of land
and had one son, Sam uel P a in te r
by nam e. They ado p ted an In d ian
boy and all lived to g e th er, but th e
wife and adopted son died, Sam uel
d isappeared and th e old man was
done. T hen cam e th e b u ild in g o f
he C olum bia R iver H ighw ay and th e
ranch was needed for its scenic beau ­
ties.
By som e legal process the property
passed in to o th e r h an d s and a por­
tion of it is now ow ned by J u II uh
M eier w hose splendid co untry hom e
ad o rn s a choice location. A ttorney
G eorge W. Joseph was m ade g u a r­
dian of th e old H aw aii», who elected
to be w ith th e fam ily of his old
friend an d he was given o ver to th e ir
care in his declining years. Mr. J o s­
eph b earin g all expenses.
Not very much Is know n con cern ­
ing th e an tec en d e n ts of "K a n a k a
J im ,” b u t he was one of su b jects of
th e H aw aiian ru lers before com ing
here. P erh ap s Mr. D ickenson know s
so m eth in g of his early history b u t it
has n ever been m ade public. He will
be rem em bered by m any, with his
brown com plexion and snow w hite
h a ir an d his g en tle disposition.
T he fu n eral took place th is a f te r ­
noon at 2 o'clock, In term e n t being
m ade in th e P o u n d er cem etery near
th e C olum bia g ran g e h all, and only a
few m iles from w here he spent so
g re a t a p o rtio n of his existence.
