The m atter was finally referred to Mr. M eyers, Jo h n M etzger and 11. Jacobson, the th ree ow ners present, to si e the fourth owner, John Kometseh, and com plete arran g em en ts am ong them selves. Mr. S tapleton will lo ad a delegation to visit the county com m issioners in regard to the c o u n ty ’s portion of the im provem ent, haxing already received encouraging assurances. Tin- second proposition subm itted was the m atter of inducing the county commisionerN to pave the cen ter of Main stree t and its e x t e n s i o n through Fairview to the Sandy road. Mr. S tapleton said th a t the county could tlo nothing this y ea r for lack of funds but contem plated the im provem ent next year. Mr. llu b e r again gave prom ise th at he would do the work for $1.19 per y a rd and Mr. S tapleton said th a t some of the paving com panies would be w illing to m ake the im provem ent and w ait for th eir money. A method was suggested whereby the co n tracto rs would be g u aran teed th eir pay next sum m er w ithout interest charges. In th a t case it would only need the sanction of the county com m issioners to have the work done on th a t proposition while the paving com panies bad th eir p lan ts here. In o rd er to b rin g the pressure of public sentim ent to bear upon the com m issioners it was decided to send out petitions all over eastern M ultnom ah, asking th a t the im provem ent be ordered. A petition in circulation y esterd ay received lOH names and enough more copies were ordered to cover the entire territo ry . V olunteer eanvassors were called for w ith the result th at S. S. Thompson, K. K. C arlson, F ran k Jones, I). C. Ross and (). A. Eastm an will take charge of the m atter and rush the petitions over the county before tlic end of next week. C ontributions to pay the expense oftbe canvass were offered by several including A rth u r K< gner $10, M ayor S tapleton $5, and others who pledged indefinite am ounts. (1. A. Eastm an, R. R. ( arl- sou and S. S. Thom pson were made a com m ittee to tak e lull charge of the m atter. The th ird m atter to receive atten tio n was the b ard su rfacin g of the rem aining portions of Main street to each curb line, provided the county im proves the center. This im provem ent would consist of nine feet in w idth on each side side of tile stre e t and eost per square y ard would be the same as for the o th er jobs. It was not decided bow fa r the im provem ent should be made north from the Powell stre e t end, th at point depending upon the a ttitu d e of the p ro p e rty ow ners along the street. Some were in fav o r of going as fa r as the new high school, but general sentim ent seemed to be in favor of going only as fa r as the Mount Hood track . M ayor S tapleton and Mr. H uber explained th at those who wisin-d to take adv an tag e of the Bancroft bonding act could do so, but tln ir action w ould not affect those who p referred to pay cash. A rth u r Dowsett stated th at sentim ent seemed to be favorable to having the im provem ent m ade and volunteered to collect the petitions of those whom he had found w illing to sign up. P etitions wen- ordered for tin Main street im provem ent and will in- circu lated by A rth u r Dow sett, A rth u r B egncr and K. A. M iller.
