Not being fam iliar w ith th e E nglish la n g u ag e Mrs. R itzin g er claim s th a t she signed th e p aper w ithout being fully aw are of its con ten ts. H er son is an em ployee of W. P. F u lle r Hi Co., in P o rtlan d , an d is engaged as su p e rin te n d e n t of the p la te glass d ep a rtm en t. MULTNOMAH COUNTY, OREGON, TUESDAY, JUNE 8, 1915 SENIOR CLASS DAMAGES $1 DECIDED IN PICNIC HELD JURY TRIAL ON SATURDAY P robably th e m ost in te restin g law su it ever tried o u t in th e G resh am ju stic e co u rt was decided la te last, n ig h t in a ju ry tria l held be fore Ju stic e Rollins yesterday. T he case was fo r d am ages in the sum of $100 for a cow alleged to have been in ju re d by an autom obile d riven by E arl S tanley on th e night of A pril 10, from the effects of w hich th e cow died a few days later. The plaintifT was E. L auber, who is now located on the S hoem aker farm . He was d riv in g a team a n l his h erd of cows along th e Powell Valley road, on his way to G resham la te a t n ig h t when one of th e cows was stru ck . A n o th er cow was also knocked down and slig h tly in ju red b u t both were ab le to trav e l a fte r th e accident. T he a u to was som ew hat dam aged b ut it was stopped and assistan ce was given in g ettin g th e In ju red cow- on its feet. L ater, when th e cow died a claim was p resen ted to Mr. S tanley for th e value of th e cow which he refu sed to pay as he as se rte d he was clearly in th e rig h t in passing th e team an d th a t th e cows w ere sc attered so th a t it was im pos sible to avoid h ittin g one of them . T he testim ony show ed th a t no lights w ere displayed on th e w agon and th a t it rem ained in th e ce n te r of the road as th e au to m o b ile approached. T he case was trie d before a jury co n sistin g of Roy K ern, C. R. W heel er, A. B. W itter, H enry L ato u rell, G eorge L eslie and F ra n k Jones. Af te r a session la stin g u n til a fte r m id n ig h t th e case was finally decided by giving Mr. L au b er a ju d g e m en t for one d o lla r an d costs. In co n v ersatio n w ith one of the ju ro rs today it was sta te d th a t the v erd ict was given Mr. L au b er, not because he had th e best of th e case, b u t because it was considered th a t th e loss of th e cow was enough w ith o u t ad d in g th e costs of th e trial. His a tto rn e y was Milo C. K ing,w hom he will have to pay as th e ju d g m e n t did n ot cover law yer fees. Mr. S tan ley’s a tto rn e y was M ayor G eorge W. S tapleton.
