11 HOME AND FARM MAGAZINE S E C T IO N Transplacting Trees H E tra n sp la n tin g of a tree, w hether it be sm all or large, usually cheeks its grow th, and w hile th is check is not alw ays detrim en tal, y e t it usually reduces th e to ta l grow th fo r th e suc ceeding tw o or th ree years. T his general check is caused by th e loss o f roots w hich tak es place in d igging th e trees. I t m atters little how carefu lly a tree m ay be dug. it will su ffe r a severe loss o f roots and in m any cases from ono- h a lf to th ree-fo u rth s o f its en tire root system , and p ractically all of its fe e d ing roots will be lost. I t is im possi ble to exercise too much care in th e digging and tra n sp la n tin g o f trees and especially in d ry or severe clim ates. The tim e or season of th e y ear for tra n sp la n tin g deciduous trees is gov erned by the developm ent o f th e tree, th e condition of the soil and th e w eath ed th a t is ap t to follow tra n sp lan tin g . M any trees may be successfully tr a n s p lan ted nt. any tim e d u rin g th eir d or m ant c r leafeless period, while o thers require th a t tra n sp la n tin g bo done at ce rta in seasons of th e year. I f the tre e s are fully m atured, th e soil moist, not wet, and th e w inters not too severe, one may feel safe in fall p lan tin g . I f th e soil is w et and poorly prepared and th e trees are not well ripened o ff, it is safer to p lan t in early spring. Decidtfhus trees should be planted from one to tw o inches deeper th an they grew in th e nursery. Thoroughly pulvprir.ed, m oist e arth should bo w orked in am ong th e roots u n til th e hole is about h a lf full, and then th is earth should be tam ped u n til it is solid. The tam ping o f e a rth around the roots o f th e trees is one of th e most im p o rtan t featu res o f tr a n s p 'ititin g trees. W ater m ay be applied to th e hole eith er the day before th e trees are p la n t ed or a fte r the hole is h a lf full of earth , b u t if the soil is m oist it is usually best not to use any w ater. T he upper h alf of the soil th a t is filled w ith th e hole m ay bo le ft loose or lig h tly tam ped, am i the su rface le ft loose and fin ely pulverized. This will serve as a muleli as well as tak e up any w ater th a t may fall on tho surface. E vergreen trees are more d iffic u lt to tra n sp la n t successfully th a n deciduous trees, b u t if the proper tim e be selected, the trees properly handled w hile th ey are out of th e ground, the m anner of p la n t ing be not too fau lty , and th e pare they receive a fte r tra n sp la n tin g be reaso n able, one may usually expect success. W ith th e proper care, 'a n evergreen tre e m ay be tran sp lan ted any m onth during th e year. P ro b ab ly th e most fav o rab le tim e fo r tra n sp la n tin g e v e r greens is in th e spring. T rees tr a n s p lan ted ju s t a fte r th ey have sta rte d in to grow th, start, a t once to grow and in m any cases do not receive a percep tib le shock. F a ll p lan tin g has been success fu lly used in m any localities, and w here all conditions are fav o rab le it is a safe venture. L arg e deep holes w ith p len ty of m oist e a rth in the bottom should be provided fo r any tree. D uring tra n sp la n tin g th e ro o ts m ust never become dried e ith er by tho wind or from th e sun. A no th er v ery im p o rtan t phase in tree tra n sp la n tin g is to m ake th e soil very, v e ry firm around its roots. I f th e soil is well prepared and in proper condition, it is im possible to m ake i t too firm . Moro new ly tran sp lan ted evergreens die on account of the p la n te r fa ilin g to m ake th e soil firm ab o u t th e roots th an from an y o th er single cause. T hia is th e only safe w ay to exclude th e a ir from th e roots, and unless th is is done fa ilu re is sure to follow. T A Thinning Grapes ANY otherwise suitable grapes do not ship well on account of the excessive compactness o f the bunch. A compact bunch is d ifficu lt to pack without injury and eannot be freed from im perfect berries without Spoiling good berries. This excessive compactness can be prevented before the berries are one- third grown. Thinning, moreover, in creases the size o f the h em es, hastens ripening, promotes eoloring and lessons some forms of sunburn. The practice is regularly followed w ith success by many growers o f Tokay, Black Morocco and other grapes, where bunches are nsually too compact. W hile apparently eostly, the expense is often more than M A counterbalanced by the sav in g in trim -.ling of th e ripe grapes. Tho increase o f q u ality th u s becomes a n et gain. The bunches are thinned a t any tim e a fte r th e berries have set and before th ey have reached one-third th eir m a nure size. No bunches are rem oved, b u t only a certain p roportion of tho b erries of each bunch. The num ber of berries to bo removed will depend upon liow com p act th e u n th in n ed bunches usually become. In general, it will v ary from one th ird to one 'naif o f th e to ta l num ber. The th in n in g is effected by cu ttin g out several of tho side b ran ch lets of th e bunch. Tho branchlets should be rem oved p rin cip ally from th e p a rt of th e bunch w hich has most tendency to com pactness, usually the upper part. The w ork can be done very rapidly, as no g reat care is nec-ssarv in preserving th e shape o f the bunch. H owever irreg u lar or one sided the bunch looks im m e d iately a fte r th in n in g , it will round out and become regular before rip en ing- A long, narrow bladed k n ife or a p air of grape trim m ing scissors can be used conveniently fo r th is work. TO DESTROY W EED S IN W ALKS. — OCK SA LT or blue vitriol is a cheap and e ffe c tiv e agent fo r destroying w eeds in w alks, garden paths, etc. The b est m ethod of procedure is to boil th e salt or blue vitriol in w ater, one pound to th e gallon, and apply th e solu tion boiling hot, w ith a w aterin g pot th a t has a sp read in g nozzle. This will keep tho weeds and worms aw ay fo r two or th ree years. P u t one pound to the square y ard a t firs t and a fterw ard s a w eaker solution m ay be applied when required. Gas liquor is an o th er cheap medium, b u t has an o ffen siv e odor and may injuro tho roots of trees if care less used.
