1J TTOAfR ANT) FARM MAGAZTNE SECTION Growing Good Potatoes in the Pacific Northwest Some Ideas on the Homely "Spud” by Men Who Know Whereof They Write. “ S c a b ,” “ D ry R o t,” and “ B lack L e g .” In some regions of th e irrig ated sections of th e sta te “ D ry R o t” and “ B lack L e g ” are rep o rted as doing as much as fo rty per cen t dam age to the crop. This disease is more p revalent w est of the Cascade M ountains, w here the clim ate is fav o rab le for its develop m ent, th an in the eastern p a rt of the state. The disease appears on any p art of the leaf, but usually tbe spots show first near the tip or m argin. T his may be due to th e fact th a t th e surface wa te r does not evu|>orate so rapidly from these points. These diseased areas soon die and tu rn brown and if the w eather conditions are fav o rab le tin a lly become black. This discoloration is o ften ac com panied by the crum pling of the leaves. The young p la n ts draw th eir n o u rish m ent from the piece of p otato used as seed and are stro n g or w eak in propor tio n to the nourishm ent obtained. Sm ail seed pieces produce small pbrtits. Small p otatoes used whole as seed have only a sm all am ount of food fo r the young plants. Some of the most successful large grow ers in the Rocky M ountain states select th e ir seed very carefu lly and p lan t special seed patches. P lan ted tins close th e p lan ts do not produce large potatoes, but a g reat many. The sm all to medium sized oues are used as seed and are planted whole. R unning Out. When a v ariety becomes less vigor ous, less productive, or th e |>otatoes be come o f Jess desirable form, we say th a t the v ariety has “ run o u t.’ ’ T his change o f ch aracter is n early a l w ays due to some less lav o rab le soil, or clim atic conditions, or to poo selection of seed.
