Mrs W illiam M K apus, w ife of a P o rtla n d business m an and p ro m in en t in social an d ch u rch circles, was killed In sta n tly Sunday T h ree o th e rs in th e c ar escaped w ith m in o r in ju rie s The accident occu rred at th e only p o in t w ith in m any rods w here an in ev itab le p lu n g e of 1000 feet in to th e bed of th e S andy riv e r would not have resu lted . It happened th a t th e only tre e of any size w ith in sight was in th e p a th of th e to p p lin g a u tom obile and b ro u g h t it to a stop before it had p lu n g ed m ore th a n 20 feet. Mrs. K ap u s w as on th e u p p er side, b u t th e vehicle to p p led up g ra d e in stead of dow n and sh e w as th ro w n u n d e r th e car. Mrs. K ellogg and Mr. Metiefee, who w ere in th e car, escaped w ith a severe s h a k in g up an d a few b ru is es, b u t Mrs. C rane, a n o th e r occu p an t, was p in n ed u n d e r th e car, a l m ost su ffo cated .
