A fter playing games and tell ing stories for a while, the company was entertain ed with a darky per sonification by Mr. S tratto n , and a lecture by Mr. Pitts. The refresh m ents were then served and after a few more stories, th e guests de parted. Ross Marston of Gresham and tMiss V ira Douglass of Sandy a t tended the program at the church on Christm as eve. Mrs. T. J. Vilquist, Florelle Vll- quist and Mr. Sellwood of P ortland stopped at Hotel Cherryville on th eir way to Welches and were re freshed on th eir cold trip with -a good hot dinner. F riel spent Christm as here and returned [ Thursday to his work at Bull Run. Mrs. Friel gave her dancing class a dance last Friday evening which was well attended and enjoyed by all The company gave Mrs. F riel three cheers before th eir departure home. G reat credit is due Miss Averill for the splendid program on Xmas eve at tlie M. E. church, the drills were especially fine. There was som ething for each one in the big tree which was beautifully decorated for the occasion. The school chil dren all had recitations appropriate for the occasion and Geo. Eden of Boston acted as S anta Claus and caused much m errim ent for the chil dren with his funny pranks.. Mr. Brooke has left th is vicinity again, to look afte r his o th er busi ness in terests in Seattle and Tacbma He may go as fa r as Spokane, Wash., to visit his brother and sis te r there. He may not retu rn before the first of March. A fter re tu rn in g to P o rtland from W ashing ton be will go directly to Hood Riv e r to superintend the planting of his 10 acre tract of orchard. Mr and Mrs Geo. Eaden spent C hristm as with Mr. and Mrs. Aver ill, parents of Mrs. Eadon. Dancing parties are in fashion in this vicinity. There was a ilancing party given Mr. Brooke T hursday evening of last week at th e old Tapp place. The com mit tee in charge decorated th e danc ing room beautifully, and the neigh bors all helped in serving a delicious luncheon. Loundree and family, Mr. and Mrs. Frank* P atterson, and Mr. and Mrs W. Kyser spent the holidays with relatives a t Independence. Miss Gladys Crenshaw of G resh am, is spending her C hristm as va cation with her sister, Mrs. J. S taf ford. Mrs. Henry E ri was the guest of P ortland relatives during C hristm as week. Geo. Schafer of Independence is visiting relatives here. The proceeds of th e basket so cial held at the schoolhouse, Dec. 21st, am ounted to $37 and will be used for pictures to beautify the walls of the schoolroom and for sup plem entary books for th e school. Saturday evening. Jan - 4th, the following question will lie de bated at the schoolhouse at 8 o ’clock “ Resolved, th a t the pen is m ightier than the sw ord.” A literary pro gram will also be rendered. Boring School opened Monday, Dec. 30, afte r the C hristm as vacation. T here are a few absentees on account of sickness. Elm er Hickey, who has been con fined to his home for more than th ree weeks, is now out and around again. W hat came near being a fatal ac cident happened to Miss Ruth Greg- son and Clarence Siefer as they were leaving the home of th e la t ter New Y ear’s afternoon. They were driving on a slow tro t when Clarence Siefer’s two younger b ro th ers came racing up behind them on horseback. The two boys did not realize how close they were to th e buggy till their horses crashed into it, completely o v ertu rn in g th e bug gy, throw ing both Miss Gregson and Mr. Siefer out onto th e hard su r faced road. Miss Gregson was h u rt quite badly on her side and a t first it was feared one or two ribs m ight be broken, but at th is hour T hursday evening she is resting easy and feeling much better. Mr. Siefer has a sprained arm and a big bruise over the rig h t eye, The two boys escaped w ithout in ju ry , though it seems almost incredible th a t they could, as the buggy was badly smashed, throw n upside down and the horse throw n down in the crash and the rig, horse and all tu rn ed d i rectly in the opposite direction from the one in which they were driving. T here was a sm all crowd at the L. A.
