GRESHAM OBJECT OF SINGLE TAX T he object of Single Tax is th a t th e sta te should own the e n tire land of th e country on the ground th a t it is th e leg itim ate property of th e w hole com m unity, th a t it ought never to have been alienated to p ri vate ow ners whose rig h ts are usurp ed and m ust be brought to an end, e ith e r by com pulsory m ethods or sim ple confiscation by th e Single Tax process. Mr. George goes so far as to advocate th e la tte r m ethod, on th e ground th a t priv ate property in land is as im m oral as slavery, and he extends his anathem a not only to ag ric u ltu ral land but to building land in tow ns,and argues th a t even a tree-hold on w hich th e ow ner has b u ilt a house is as much a robber of th e public dom ain as th e largest es ta te of a H ighland laird. He con dem ns not only the g reat e states of th e aristocracy of th e old w orld, but th e sm all properties of th e Am eri can hom esteader and all of th e F rench p easantry— even th e poor widow with h er two sm all lots. In h is eyes th e possession of any por tion of th e e a r th ’s surface by private ow ner is th e ft, and the stolen goods o u g h t to be restored to the public |that has been defrauded. I'n d e r th e p resent system and pres e n t land laws, land is property, and 1 hold th a t p riv ate property in land is consistent w ith and necessary to m an in a sta te of civilization. Un d e r our present system of exchange which is the product of civilization and the outgrow th of th e division of labor, we have several classes of property. I-and ow ners by individuals may be considered first, as it is up on land and land values, home values th a t all oth er in d u stries rest. C attle and o th e r anim als th a t a re bought a n d sold on account of th e ir useful ness for food oi* otherw ise, m ay be classed as an o th er kind of property. Stocks, bonds and obligations to pay may be classed as an o th er kind. The p roducts of th e soil coupled w ith labor, form an o th er class. Goods, w ares and m erchandise, m anufac tu red articles of all kinds, w hether m anufactured by m achinery o r by hand constitute an o th er class. Books containing the m ental effo rts and energy of individuals may be classed as an o th er kind of property. All th e property com ing u nder th e var ious classifications are essential to m an in a sta te of society. One is exchangeable for an o th er by and through th e process of our system of exchange. If an individual de sires a m anufactured article of any description, he may sell th e product of his labor, or may exchange an a r ticle of value th a t he has for money which is th e blood of com merce, and with th a t money purchase any oth er article he may d esire th a t is o b tain able. The various articles which may be considered th e p roduct of man are th e resu lt of th e req u ire m ents of society. Consequently they are in dem and. T herefore are ex changeable for o th e r com m odities th a t are in dem and,, according to th e tastes and desires of th e various individuals of society whch are ex trem ely num erous. W hen an article is noi m ore desired by society, the m an u factu re of it ceases, and it its plaoe a m ore Im p o rtan t article is m anufactured. T hus th e process of th e grow th and dem and of th e h u n dreds of th o u san d s of various m anu factured articles desired, and even necessary .fo r m an in a sta te of society. It a m an owns cattle and is desirous of ow ning some o th er kind of p roperty, he may sell his stock for money, and ta k e th e money and p urchase o th e r kinds of proper ty which he desires. If he has land and w ants to convert th a t land into money and w ith th a t money travel abroad, be can do so. Or if he has goods, w ares and m erchandise of any description th a t is desired by society, he can convert hts goods, w ares and m erchandise into money, and w ith th a t money purchase land, autom obiles, Jewelry, or airships if he so desires. He will have no dif ficulty in finding those who have th e articles he desires and who are w illing and anxious to p art with them for a certain stipulated value. I f an individual has money, he will have no difficulty w hatever in find ing o th ers who own land, to part w ith th a t land for a certain am ount of his money. H ence it should be obvious to th e read er th a t all kinds of property which are desired by society and which can be exchanged, one for an o th er, should be treated alike in th e eyes of th e law. Any discrim ination ag ain st one kind of p roperty would have a tendency to in ju re th a t p a rtic u la r class. It would be perfectly n a tu ra l for an individual to desire and hold th a t class of p ro p erty th a t was favored by law. Mr. George reasoned th is out. T herefore he schemed to dis crim in ate ag a in st land, and by th e process of th is discrim ination force land back in to th e hands of the gov ernm ent. It is a question for th e people to determ in e w hether or not society would be b etter off under a system of land te n u re w here the governm ent would be th e ow ner and th e occupants th e te n an ts; or w hether it would be best for society to continue u nder the present sys tem, allow ing th e Individuals to have p riv ate p roperty in land,,— or to put it very plain, own th e land for them selves' and not fo r another. As long as we tre a t land as property, th e re should be no discrim ination ag a in st it.
