Grace Ogden Madison Orem Michael McElligott The legacy of one of Ione’s most beloved com- munity leaders lives on through the dreams of three exceptional students. The 2025–26 Maryan L. McElli- gott Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to Ione High School alumni Grace Ogden, Madison Orem and Michael McElligott for their academic excellence, community involvement and shared values with the scholarship’s namesake. Grace Ogden, currently studying Agricultural Com- munications and Journalism at Oklahoma State Univer- sity, and Madison Orem, pursuing a double major in Animal Sciences and Agricultural Business at the University of Idaho, each received a $4,000 scholar- ship. Michael McElligott, also attending the Univer- sity of Idaho and majoring in Geographic Information Science and Cartography, was awarded $2,000. Founded in 1997, the Maryan L. McElligott Me- morial Scholarship Fund was created to honor the life and legacy of Mary- an McElligott, a Morrow County Woman of the Year (1992), dedicated volunteer and fierce advocate for education. Maryan spent decades serving her com- munity through the Amer- ican Legion Auxiliary Ione Post 95, local schools, and as a 4-H leader for 20 years. Known for her legendary cakes and as an instructor at Blue Mountain Community College, Maryan’s talents and spirit left a lasting im- pact on the region. “Maryan believed deeply in the power of education and service,” said Vince McElligott, one of Maryan’s eight children and chair of the scholarship committee. “This scholar- ship helps ensure that the values she lived by—com- munity, integrity, and the pursuit of education—are passed on to future gener- ations of Ione graduates.” The scholarship is open to all Ione High School graduates enrolled full-time at an accredited college or university, with pref- erence given to sopho- mores, juniors and seniors. It supports students who embody Maryan’s values and demonstrate high aca- demic achievement, strong character, and commitment to family, school and com- munity—even if they face financial challenges in pur- suing higher education. The scholarship com- mittee includes Ione resi- dents Ryan Rudolf, Linda LaRue and Anne Morter, Matthew McElligott of North Powder, OR, and Vince McElligott of Hous- ton, TX. The scholarship endowment was established in 1994 by the L.J. McEl- ligott family and is ad- ministered by the Oregon Community Foundation. Students who meet the eligibility requirements— including past recipients— are encouraged to apply each year. Applications are available through the Ore- gon Student Access Com- mission at https://www. oregonstudentaid.gov. Through the continued generosity of the McElligott family and the support of the community, this schol- arship remains a tribute to a woman who dedicated her life to nurturing both people and possibilities. 177 N.
