EIGHT - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, February 12, 2025 Heppner wrestling has busy two weeks Girls place second at BEO Invitational Heppner High School wrestlers have had two more busy weekends of wrestling. On Friday, Janu- ary 31, the boys’ team trav- eled to Echo, to compete in the 1A/2A Special District 3 Dual Meet. The following day, February 1, Heppner hosted the annual Bank of Eastern Oregon Boys’ and Girls’ Invitational. During this event, the Mustangs also honored their senior wrestlers and their families, as it was their final home meet. The honored seniors includ- ed Jaime Cavan, Keeley Nairns, Hayden McMahon, Zachary Brown and Nicko- las Wenberg. On Friday, February 7, Heppner High wrestlers were unable to attend the scheduled meet in LaPine due to winter weather, but Saturday, February 8, the girls wrestling team trav- eled to Irrigon to compete in the Stokes Landing Girls Invitational. At the 1A/2A Special District 3 Dual Meet, the Heppner boys’ team took home the third-place tro- phy. They had been holding pace with the team that ultimately took first place but fell short during the semifinals, according to Coach Tyler Robinson. During the BEO Tour- nament, the boys earned third place, and the girls secured a second-place trophy overall. In their re- spective weight classes, Zachary Brown, Landon McMahon and Jaime Cavan each clinched first place; Keeley Nairns, Harlee Cot- ton, Journey Cavan-Harris, Sarah Munkers and Lane Critchlow placed second; Owen Guerra, Conner Wil- son and Loren Trujillo each placed third; Emilia Ca- van-Harris, Hayden McMa- hon, and Nickolas Wenberg placed fourth; Kaden King finished in fifth. Additionally, during the BEO tournament, a silent auction featured bas- kets filled with goodies donated by local businesses and individuals. This auc- tion brought in more than $1,600 for the wrestling program. Bank of Eastern Ore- gon, Bucknum’s, Murray’s, Wheatland Insurance, Fad- ed Joe’s, DeSpain Pizza, Roger’s Toyota, MCGG, JJLynn Photography (Josie Miles), Lynan Scott, Megan Fischer, LaRae Kindle, Sheena Shank and Kasey Jones were all instrumental with their generous support and donations, as were those who bid and won items during the auction on Saturday. Heppner sent only three wrestlers to compete in the Stokes Landing Girls Invitational; Loren Trujillo and Emilia Cavan-Harris placed third, while Sarah Munkers placed fourth, and the team placed ninth overall. This weekend the girls’ wrestling team will be traveling to La Grande for the Special District 3 District Tournament, which combines twenty-nine 1A/2A/3A/4A teams to compete. The top four wres- tlers from each weight class will qualify for the state tournament that will be held February 27-28 at the Vet- erans Memorial Coliseum in Portland. Journey Cavan-Har- ris is a returning district placer with intentions of qualifying again this year. Coaches Zac Brown and Tyler Robinson are hopeful that this year Heppner will have their first ever girl qualifier for state. Loren Trujillo (115) placed 3rd. She won by fall over Maura McShane (Pendleton) in 1:31. She lost to Talluah April (En- terprise) by fall in 3:54. Trujillo won by fall over Jamie Torres (Riverside) in 1:44, but Kari Stockhoff (Union) won by decision 4-2 over Trujillo. Emilia Cavan-Harris (140) placed 3rd. She lost by fall to Basey Dawson (Joseph) in 3:19 and McK- enzie Reilly (Estacada) in 0:52. Sarah Munkers (170) placed 4th. She won by fall over Hailey Wright (Union) in 1:47 but lost to Rebec- ca Wiltberger (Riverside) by fall in 3:34. Munkers forfeited due to medical reasons in Round 3 and Round 4.
